Which would be better if your son didn't get into the main campuses. He did get into Altoona for Penn state and is waiting on Pitt. Just wondering what opinions are.

Depends on what he wants to do with the degree, and which satellite campus. I will say, we also get very good transfer students from CCAC at Pitt, so if he wants to stay close to home that's an option I would recommend too.

He wont be staying close to home as we are moving. He wants to do Kiniesology(sp) which they do at UP and three other campuses. The Altoona campus is the one he got into for the moment. He is just waiting to hear from Pitt.

Just an FYI: if you leave the state, it may affect his ability to receive in-state tuition anywhere.

My brother got his BS in Kinesiology from Penn State but did all four years at UP. I went to a Penn State branch campus then to UP. I chose this option over attending Pitt main campus. For me, I really enjoyed the "traditional" college campus setting versus Pitt's urban campus as well as both a small college and large university experience . I got my Masters at Pitt; the campus setting was a better fit for me as a young, early/mid 20s adult.

I meant his home, to whatever extent Pittsburgh feels like his home town after spending several years in the area.

The branch campuses of both Pitt and Penn State have tuition costs on virtually the same tiers as their main campuses, and yet, offer a whole lot less, in terms of, the course offerings and true college/university experiences. The majority of students attending the branch campuses are often commuters, who will not live on the grounds and will not be actively involved in many of the campus activities. On weekends, the branch campuses will appear almost deserted, as many of the resident students head elsewhere.... some go home, some to other colleges, some to anyplace where there might be a party. Often the branch campuses are referred to "suitcase colleges" because of the high percentage of students leaving each and every weekend. Because of its close proximity to State College, Penn State Altoona is a classic example of a suitcase college.

I have to agree with the previous poster who recommended CCAC.

I would try and go with Penn State because it would be more diverse. Pitt is in the city which has a certain mindset that doesn't recognize anything outside of its culture. Penn State would be much more politically diverse, which would be a much healthier environment. The city of Pittsburgh is very close minded and would shut off all others that aren't far left. That is not a healthy atmosphere for anyone going to school. JMHO. Go for Penn State.

Everybody at Pitt thinks child abuse should be reported to the police, but Penn State is willing to tolerate different views.
