Technically, this was an official presidential visit and not a campaign event. You can debate the merits of using taxpayer money for the visit (in the politics forum), and I think that’s probably a fair debate. As far as appearing in promotional material, you would first have to presuppose that this technically official visit was, in fact, promotional (I know, not exactly a stretch). You would also have to suppose that the individuals in attendance had no right to boo or otherwise voice disapproval of the visit.

Also, to plan for training on the amount of notice typically given for a presidential visit for an unknown number of people would be a logistical nightmare. You are left with allowing people to stay home, which probably would’ve looked bad for the plant, or maybe arranging some sort of volunteer event as an alternative, paying the workers in either case.

I am pretty sure my employer can require me to be in promotional material for them. Maybe they took a group photo and used it to show how many jobs were created? Again, you can be opposed to this, but it is reality. There are a ton of legitimate reasons to be upset about what is going on in the world today. Given the volume and severity of those things, this seems pretty low on the totem pole.

This really is a non story, but people get all excited over it for some reason.

The local has 2,400 workers on the site and Mr. Broadbent said he would not “bad rap about it one way or another.”

“We’re glad to have the jobs. We’re glad to have the project built,” he said. “The president is the president whether we like him or dislike him. We respect him for the title.”

Mr. Broadbent said anyone who did not want to show up to work that day was free to do so. “This is America,” he said.
Mr. Fisher said Friday that “this was treated as a paid training day with a guest speaker who happened to be the president.”

He said workers engaged in “safety training and other activities” in the morning.

“It’s not uncommon for us to shut down the site for quarterly visits from VIPs — popular sports figures like Rocky Bleier and Franco Harris have visited the site to engage with workers and to share inspirational messages. Shell/Penske NASCAR driver Joey Logano was another guest at the site,” Mr. Fisher said.

Who cares? A paid training day. Good for those that attended. Most would go into overtime they also said if they attend. So what?

Agreed. I’m not a fan of Trump but this is stupid. When you live in a silo you lose perspective. If things aren’t the way you know then everything else is wrong. There isn’t a bigger project and job creator in the region or probably most places in the nation. The cracker plant is huge for the region. It is fueling growth of the western suburbs, WV panhandle and 79 corridor. Pittsburgh city is left out of the party. They would rather protest the plant then try and get the spin-off jobs from it.

The plant workers are racking in the dough. Some out of town workers are making around 700 bucks per day with per diems, pay etc. What other jobs pay that amount in Pittsburgh? Now I understand why they built an new steakhouse here in Weirton. That money is being spent here...

$700 everyday no way in hell. I was topped out on pay at brackenridge. I was making $504 for a 12 hour day. Sundays were a $1100 day but $700 everyday is not happening on a regular basis.

Good to know that you are willing to sell your soul for 700 bucks a day. How did it feel when you bent over?

Past presidents have toured plants and construction sites without having every employee who works there mandated to attend a rally. Usually, the CEO and some top brass escort him around for a meet and greet with employees. But with Trump, he has to be the center of attention with hordes of people around him to make it look like he knows what he's doing. And he droned on for two hours, mostly about himself.

Except every employee wasn’t mandated to attend.
