Pittsburgh T-G Glbt neighborhoods
My partner and I considering a move to PittsburghWe visited the city a few months ago and fell in love with what we saw. The prices seem much more affordable than what we are used to seeing in our hometown. We didn't stay long enough to get a feel for the individual neighborhoods though. We are looking for a place that is in the cheap affordable 70,000 -125,000 range, Safe and close to good public transit. Glbt friendliness is a big consideration. My partner is transitioning from male to female and we would need to live in a place where we wouldn't feel constantly harassed and unsafe. Normally I'd say we don't need an address on the pride parade street rout, but we would need to live/work in a somewhat accepting area.
We would both need to find new employment too, our current jobs probably wouldn't move with us.
Is finding an affordable gay friendly neighborhood actually possible?

You might want to contact GLENDA: GLENDA Home They may be able to point you to some helpful sources. At work we used to use a frame shop in East Liberty run by a transgendered woman, so there is a small community here.

Moderator cut: orphaned, the post you were quoting was removed

I go to happy hour at the thunderbird like once a month. Lawerenceville is strange because you have like 50% liberal hippie/gay/young professional that doesn't care, etc, and then there is the blue collar hard working types. I talk to many of them, and theiY seem to be more of a tolerated stance on issues like sexuality. I really don't think Lawerenceville would be a problem.

I agree that the best neighborhoods for you are in the East End of the city: Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Highland Park, Regent Square, Friendship, and Point Breeze. All of these neighborhoods are filled with straight families who are accepting of diversity; gay singles and couples (some with children); different ethnicities and races. Many work in the nearby medical complexes and universities and are educated and progressive. There is a trans community in Pittsburgh, so check out the Internet for the local resources. There are more than 100 GLBT organizations in town, so settle in and get as involved as you like. Welcome to Pittsburgh - we're glad to have you!

I'd actually say that affordability may end up being your biggest constraint--many of the neighborhoods people are mentioning have become desirable all around, and thus a little expensive for Pittsburgh. Which is not to be discouraging--I am quite confident you can find what you are looking for--but once you have some general areas in mind I would suggest coming back here for some tips on where the more affordable properties might be.
