I am talking about at Craft and Fifth there weren't any. I didn't walk with the parade. Are you talking about what happened today?

No, yesterday and last night. I heard today things are more subdued though that could clearly change by tonight.

Just got this in a CMU campus email:

Quote:
As many of you are aware there was some vandalism along Craig Street and at the Mellon Institute last night. Two windows were broken in the Mellon Institute and two campus police cars were damaged. One vehicle had its windshield broken and one vehicle¹s side windows were broken.

what's up with wpxi constantly referring to the march today as the "so-called 'people's march'"?

is it also the so-called "g20"?

The P-G blog seems to be updating with reports about the Merton march and rally fairly regularly. As far as I can tell it seems to be going pretty much without incident.

And yes, it is a shame this is creating the impression that the only way you can get your event on live TV is to start trouble with the police.

On another topic: the incident on the stairwell at Pitt was indeed a screwup by the police. But without making excuses for their screwup--Nazi Germany? Really?

I actually think that kind of rhetoric is counterproductive, because with a well-documented screwup like this you might well have the opportunity to get the relevant authorities to look seriously at what happened in order to prevent such incidents in the future. But if you go for the Nazi Germany angle, I suspect they are more likely just to dig in and defend the police.

It's not an isolated incident at this event or at others around the country. The parallels are too similar to be an accident.

Yeah, that is BS, and reflective of an all-too-common double standard for when the media does or does not question the labels that people give themselves.

Are you talking about the stairwell incident? What other incidents do you have in mind?

Just to review the facts, what I saw on the tape was two riot police at the top of the stairwell telling the students they had to go back down. There were apparently more riot police at the bottom telling them they had to go up. One of the students went up to talk to the riot police at the top to explain the situation, and then the riot police at the top let them pass.

More You Tube videos. Also, a radio talk show that I've been listening to the last couple of days has reporters on the scene taking video and doing live reports from ground zero. According to their reports the police and military are going into neighborhoods and using sound cannons to clear the streets of everyone despite the fact they are not near the protesters.

Right now one of the reporter's on the scene said that a young girl gave the peace sign to the police and they raider their batons at her. I would imagine that they'll tackle her if she says "hello" to them.
