A group of teenagers in western New York has been accused of harassing members of a mosque by yelling obscenities and insults during evening prayers for Ramadan, sideswiping a worshiper with a vehicle and firing a shotgun outside, the authorities said Tuesday.

<snip>

Mr. Vendetti, who is accused of firing the shotgun, was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon and faces up to four years in prison if convicted, Mr. Cardone said.

Asked about the motive, Mr. Cardone said the teenagers used “very poor judgment.”

“It’s just kids doing stupid things,” he said, “but it got more serious when they ran into a member of the mosque and they discharged a weapon. And we are taking it seriously.”

How's that for religious tolerance in the US?
At least they caught the criminals.

I also am skeptical of the story. reason 1, the NY times is a tabloid. reason 2, religious intolerance only exists in the south.

I am happy to read the members of the mosque handled the situation appropriately.

Here's another link: Five charged with disrupting Muslim prayer service - Police Blotter - The Buffalo News (http://www.buffalonews.com/city/police-courts/police-blotter/article177232.ece - broken link)

Zimmerman said that a group has been showing up regularly outside the mosque for three weeks to harass the congregation.

In the past, the mosque's fence has been burned and rammed into by a vehicle. The lawn has been damaged by drivers doing "doughnuts," and rugs and artifacts have been stolen from the structure, Huzair said.

"But nothing to the point where they started brandishing weapons and firing at us," he said.

I hope they treat the crime as a crime and not as "boys will be boys."

Hawkeye, have there been news stories today about a people at temple or synagogue being attacked?
Gee, I missed it, but I found this article about religious intolerance in the US that became criminal.

Unsure how this is pro-Muslim. Doubly unsure how posting links from what is going on in other countries has anything to do with this thread.

Why does it matter that Jews are more often a victim of harassment? I am Jewish and was a serious victim of harassment over several years in the 90s- that doesn't somehow make what is CURRENTLY happening at mosques around the country, including this one, OK.

A few months ago at my Jewish college, someone broke into the Muslim Student Center and did some vandalism, broke a few things, and stole the Imam's priceless Qu'ran with a lifetime's work of notations and sermons. The entire community at large, without fail, stood behind the Muslim community and condemned the actions of one or two people who most likely were not members of the university.

Why can't we just shut up about politics and condemn this?

chielgirl,

Do you even understand your own arguement?

You posted an OP pointing out that some idiot teens did something stupid. You then used that to imply that ALL Americans are bigots.

You understand that, right?

Because the rest of us do.

Teens do stupid things. Your point?

That's far less of a threat to anyone than the official state sanctioned hatred promoted in most Muslim countries. You understand that, right?

FYI, Muslims aren't a race either. Islam is an ideology. Finding philosophical systems of belief less than attractive is hardly bigotry.

Please show me where I did that.

Who said that muslims were a race? It certainly wan't me.
I'm not talking about any other country, I'm talking about actions taken in the USA.
If you choose to compare us to the lowest common denominator, it's a sad state of affairs.

Somehow, this isn't the least bit surprising. A group of teenagers without much in the way of brains figured they had a cheap way to get some thrills. Everyone hates mosques, right? So why not raise a little hell at their expense. Can't you just hear their lawyers portraying them as "good" kids who might only have been a little "misguided?" (Makes you wonder what kinds of things they've been learning at home).
