Exactly! It's been like that since the 1980s. It's been propped up by tax dollars and big government for 30+years.

We in America are still building Amtrak lines while the Chinese build bullet trains all over their country. LMAO! And we wonder why America is losing the innovative edge. Railroads are obsolete.

Well, you are never going to get the majority to approve of spending so much when it only affects a small region of the country. Especially when other parts of the country could really use it and are denied in order to keep the NEC upgraded. Why does Amtrak need a completely new right of way? Why not just borrow the French design and put the high speed lines on viaducts above existing routes?

As for speed, there were Turbo trains hitting speeds of 170mph... Over 40 years ago!

If they cut the Longest distance lines , then the entire Amtrak system would be profitable. The Midwestern , Cali / Cascade short lines are profitable. If Amtrak focused on Regional systems then we be talking about alot of Profitable lines.

There are a couple of things I don't get.

1) why do people have a problem investing in the NE corridor which is profitable and will make even more profit with further investment?

2) Why does everyone complain about taxpayer dollars going to Amtrak but are okay with taxpayer dollars building new roads and maintaining old ones?

There building an Alt Route , its not just Amtrak trains that use the NEC other agencies and about 650,000 daily commuters do. This Region's Economy is starting to rely on trains more. This might be a private investment , and most of this Project with use Existing ROW. We have Several Dual Corridors already , but we need more since many of those are nearing capacity. This plan is ontop of the 4,000 miles of planned restored Intercity / Commuter lines that will service 90% of the Northeast / Mid Atlantic. This project also seems to include upgrading the current NEC. Theres is a huge need for an Inland NEC , since the current NEC floods and is affected by coastal storms and can't be upgraded that easily to higher speeds.

LOL , it seems this country is only concerned with building New Highways , the old ones are collapsing one by one. We really need to stop building new and take care of what we have.

By 2040 makes it SO easy to cancel this. If they were serious about it, they wouldn't have had a framework of 30 years.

Nah , something like this won't be canceled , Probably redone. But the Northeast is one of a few places that HSR will actually work and high a farebox return.
