Um, wow, I never thought I'd see the day when I read these words. As a Recovering Catholic, the blanket ban against condoms has been one of my biggest grievances against the church, since the church's HUGE influence *could* save millions of lives in Africa.
It's nice to finally see them enter the 20th century.
if the Pope would allow priests to marry then maybe the Catholic church would not attract so many kid-fondlers...
I respectively disagree. Its their belief that a priest should not mary and that's OK by me. However they need to become responsible for the men that they employ.
They need to do better psychological test, then monitor there employees.
Unrelated to child rape but along with priesthood. STOP telling gay men that they can use the priest hood to ignore there feelings. If a strait priest sees a hot girl and looks at her but why do that think a gay priest would not have any feelings

Yes....but...this is what he says about it from your link:

In the case of a male prostitute, says Benedict, using a condom to reduce the risk of HIV infection "can be a first step in the direction of moralisation, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one cannot do whatever one wants".
You will note he does not mention protecting female prostitutes. Very odd. In other words he still does not condone women using birth control. Or is there some other possible interpretation?
At least some progress in that old fool's mind... It was time, after decades of actively promoting genocide against Africans and other peoples in developing countries.

good post This goes to the root of the argument about sexuality. We all know that everyone has sexual urges. The question is, how do we ACT on it? If a priest vows celibacy, then that is his choice. I think the rest of us could learn something here. Is it too hard to ask of people to choose their sexual partners carefully? If a priest can follow the rules of the priesthood, then why can't gay people follow the don't ask, don't tell?

he is not really "condoning" birth control. He is admitting that condoms will help prevent AIDS.
