I disagree to a point.
Yes, there is a need for some secrecy, but if we're embarassed by it when it comes to light or are acting in the opposite way of what we say, we're hypocrites and need to be called on it.

What's this "we" stuff? I could be wrong, but I thought you didn't even live in the US?

And please, name one country that doesn't have private policies for their own self-interest that might be seen publicly in an unfavorable light.

It is still operating because the CIA wants it to operate. If they did not, it would be gone in less than a minute. The Dept of Justice can kill any website it wants and has done so to many of them. See:
Homeland Security seizes domain names - The Hill's Hillicon Valley

So knowing that the government has the POWER to shut down any site it wants, why does it not shut this one down??? The answer is obviously that the site is there for the purpose of misinformation by the CIA. While the American shepple might believe what the papers say, anybody with a brain knows better!

News outlets publish cables leaked by Wikileaks – This Just In - CNN.com Blogs

Quote:
No documents had been posted on WikiLeaks, which said via Twitter earlier Sunday that it was under cyber attack, when five newspapers - the New York Times, the Guardian in England, Le Monde in France, Der Spiegel in Germany and El Pais in Spain - put details from the leaked documents on their websites.

Hacker attack crashes Wikileaks website

Quote:
Berlin, Nov 29 (DPA) An apparent hacker attack crashed the Wikileaks website Sunday, just as 250,000 leaked US diplomatic despatches were being made public, but news media sites carrying edited versions of the cables remained operational.
The Wikileaks Iraq and Afghan War Diaries domain was brought down by a method known as distributed denial of service (DDoS), in which a huge number of computers repeatedly demand web pages from the server, shutting out ordinary human users and causing the server to jam.
