It had been unclear how many of the Russian SA-24 missiles were delivered to Venezuela, though the transfer itself was not secret. Chavez showed off a few dozen at a military parade in April 2009, saying they could "deter whatever aerial aggression against our country." A high-level Russian delegation told American officials in Washington in July of that year that 100 of the missiles had been delivered in the first quarter of 2009.
Then earlier this year, Russia reported to the U.N. Register of Conventional Arms, which records the transnational sale of weaponry, that the deal totaled 1,800 missiles.

And yet left leaners expect us to sigh that START treaty which will make them the winners. I just can't understand how people in this country can continue to want our government to give in to Russia time after time.

What is the link between START and shoulder fired anti-aircraft missiles?
The US still makes arms sales to Latin America but increasingly these countries go to more reliable long term suppliers (France, Israel, Russia, China...) whose export policies aren't susceptible to the political winds & whims of their legislatures.
Unlike with mid- and long-range missiles, there is nothing wrong with acquiring anti-aircraft missiles as they are defensive in nature. Of course it makes you wonder who Chavez thinks might attack his country and why...

Hmmmmm...are they to defend the Iranian missles which are presumably on their way to Chavez?
Venezuela's business. Why in the hell should any American care about what Venezuela, and by extension, Chavez, does with their own money? Last i remember, it's a sovereign nation. Must we stick our noses in everybodys business?
The business of the US is to stick our nose into everyone's business. We are not only the cops of the world we are the business enforcement thugs of the world.
If I were the government of Venezuela I would be purchasing good defensive weapons from any source that would take my money because of the intense hostility shown by my northern neighbor that just happens to have the most expensive and extensive military on the planet.
Yes, as I said those missiles are indeed a cause for concern, especially for its neighbors, not so much the US.
I wouldn't dismiss the threat to us quite so lightly just yet. IF reports of Iranian missles coming to Venezuela are correct (and I suspect they are), never forget that Iran does have missles which will reach us and has access to even longer range ones through their dealings with North Korea and Russia, neither of which are our friends. Just because reports only mention shorter range missles doesn't mean we might not wake up one morning and find better ones in place.
