I'm not exactly sure, but I found Oregon's Dept of Health analysis of the suicide rate within the state - the data is from 1994 (not sure why they don't have anything more recent). Suicide and Suicidal Thoughts (http://www.dhs.state.or.us/dhs/ph/chs/data/suicide/pr_sui.shtml - broken link)

Not at all a gun control pot-shot, but the state's rate of suicide by firearm is way above average and has increased over the past 10 years, which may also account for part of the high rate. Although, there are plenty of other states with accessibility to guns where the rates are not as high. The report does not address physician-assisted suicide.

Generally, cause of death is ruled by the medical examiner - I imagine in the scenario you described would warrant some consultation with the police to determine if there was any cause to believe it wasn't an accident. However, your point is well-taken - how many deaths not ruled suicides may have been but we'll never know. Intent is hard to prove, especially if there's no clear evidence left behind.

Yet another area where Red States show a lousy record compared to Blue States.

They have higher rates of suicide, teenage pregnancy, divorce, more porn purchases.

Lower rates of insured, and scholastic achievement, higher rates of poverty, and lower incomes.

Then they have the nerve to lecture Blue States on morality and fiscal policy!

Especially funny how all these cranky, independent, Alaska frontiersman, gun nuts, are up in the cold, freezing their asses off, lecturing Blue Staters on how bad social programs are, all the while they have the highest suicide rates...lol

Any proof that blue states have better safety nets and programs to support people when they are down???

Or is that just some silly liberal assumption?

More simple-minded assumptions.

Suicide rates go up where there is less daylight. Alaska winters don't have much daylight. Neither does Montana. Hence the higher rates of suicide.

I didn't say anything about money.

And more money does not equal better care.

Look at education expenditures.

The point would be proven by looking at education expenditures.

Would you like to compare whites in Red States to Blue states in scholastic scores?

How about blacks in Blue States to blacks in Southern States?

How about where the Elite colleges in the USA???? Overwhelming majority in Blue States.

So why are all of those countries like Germany, France, Luxembourg, etc. all ahead of the US in suicide rates? They have what you Canucks would call a better "safety net" than these blue states you think so highly of.
