Recent talk here is for our own President having a single button to turn off all internet.

Communicating is how we socialize. Good and bad.

Do you feel our government should have the ability to turn everything off, even though they don't own it.?

The internet isn't the only communications method. I don't think the government should have the ability to shut down the Internet but I also don't think it's the only way to communicate.

Well..it wouldn't be a button per say.
It would be a phone and the authority to tell providers "kill the line".
The authority would allow the government to mandate the providers implement a quick way to severe the internet for users while keeping the military connected.
Give that power to the FCC, like they want, and you've opened Pandora's box.

And reading the AP story about how Egypt went silent..technologists are dumbfounded that Egypt did what was thought "unthinkable".

Sure..go ahead with your "can't happen here, can't happen here".
The count is now 3 where it DID happen. Maybe when the count is up to 10 you'll wake up ?
Maybe too late if the FCC gets the authority they want to "watch over the internet" so terrorists don't get ahold of it ? They'll take it down "for your own good" just like Egypt did..right ?

It's the fastest if you want to organize.
Mail ?
Radio stations are owned, papers are owned, phone calls..who has numbers ?

The internet is the government's biggest enemy because it can rally people over great distances within seconds.

Only the RWers. But hey, if we were to go back to what they want, the only communication would be by Pony Express.

The FCC has had the power to override the TV and radio for years, not sure the big deal over the internet. "This is a test of the emergency broadcast system, this is only a test. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
