Share6 The new motion-picture treatment of the comic book hero Captain America has received quite a bit of buzz, thanks to the, er, brave new take of attempting to disconnect the Captain from America. Next year’s presumed blockbuster will downplay the “flagwaving,” as director Joe Johnston puts it, in favor of a more nuanced worldview. Allahpundit wrote about this last night, but it’s worth another look:
“We’re sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers,” said Joe Johnston, whose past directing credits include “Jurassic Park III“ and “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.” He’s a guy that wants to serve his country, but he’s not a flag-waver. We’re reinterpreting, sort of, what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was.” …He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver,” Johnston said. “He’s just a good person.
I heard that when this is released over seas,,,,,,it will be called The First Avenger. Not Capt America:The First Avenger.
Hey!! Anybody remember a movie called "From Russia With Love?"
What the heck is wrong with this country???? We have a President now who doesn't believe we are any better than Mumbai. We have Hollywood turning "The great American Hero (GI JOE) into a U.N. peace keeping force. Perry White wonders if Superman still believes in Truth, Justice and All that Kind of Stuff??" Bryan singer deletes "The American Way?"
If this country is that bad, leave!!! Why are tfousands trying to sneak in here, by hook or by crook, if we are so terrible????
Why is being a patriot equated to be jingoistic!!? He probably won't be fighting Nazis in this movie either. Somehow I bet they will find a way around Hitler too. Even though Cap was created for that purpose! This really frustrates me. These young film makers are products of decades of liberal education....or indoctrination. Our kids are taught that America (the country that has given them everything) is evil.
I've been waiting for this movie for a long time. But now....I just don't know what I'm gonna see.
1941
His first appearance is him slugging Hitler in the mouth! And this is jingoistic???

Glenn Beck complained when G.I. Joe went global as well.
Here's the reality: movie making is a global business and they need global receipts. Would you go see a hyper anglophile version of Captain Britain (real character)?
We live in a global market place. Thems the shakes.
Captain America has gone through many incarnations over the decades. He's still the most jingoistic character in the books, even if it is toned down. It's not about patriotism, it's that he is a very idealistic person.

Actually, he is all about patriotism. Hence, Captain AMERICA!
