If we truly were all about defending our nation and any threat to us as a nation, like the US. Constitution said, before some Progressive thought we should be the worlds police force, then
the draft would actually bring this nation together and bond us like glue to one another.
The draft for all men and women to do at least 3 years, would be a very good thing for our national pride and productivity, as long as we have policy that we are not and will never be the world's police force.
I don't think there would be anyone, that would be against a war to defend our nation. At least not for long.

Make congress declare war.
I can agree with the war in Afghanistan. The problem is that we backed out to quickly. We should have finished that war. Iraq was a stupid idea. I support the no fly zone in Libya, but not boots on the ground. Let the rest of the world invade Libya if they want.
The United Nations works fine, despite what some have suggested. If The United States, England, France, China, and Russia all agree to invade a country, that countries days are numbered. We didn't agree to invade Libya, just bomb Gaddafi. We've done that, he can't use planes to kill his own people. Fine. But boots on the ground, no.
We need to protect only our own interests and stop trying to control things that don't directly affect us. And...we should completely stop giving other countries taxpayer's money when we are in debt up to our eyeballs.

South Korea only requires two years, and if I recall, just the men.
Dude, you're so militaristic!
You have to remember that wars and "interventions" are very profitable for a range of different interests in the US. This isn't even necessarily the result of outright malice, either. But once you have entrenched interests whose existence depends on a "security state," they will press for policies that bolster their interests.
These interests can be government agencies, private companies, or hybrid groups like think-tanks.
They have the power to "create their own weather" by crafting stories, "intelligence" reports, and political talking points that are friendly to their goals and desires - and then their allies in the political establishment help turn all this into policy.
The voting public tends not to look into these issues, or care about them.
