no one said it is: you said conservatives period. Of course most really socially conservative voters are not pro gay rights or not 100% so, but that isn't the majority of Republicans or conservatives period. It is the grouping of people together that upsets so many. Liberals have a huge habit of doing this.
The vast majority of child molesters in the US are heterosexual, religious and married (according to a study of over 4000 child molesters).
yes, you are right except for the religious part. Remember some claim to be religious, even having churches, but they are only part of their own "make believe" religion.
Then the distinction ought to have been made --- the OP was saying all conservatives are against gays, and that is just not so.
and so was fiyero. He still won't comment about the difference between social conservatives, fiscal conservatives and why he and the OP think conservative and Republican mean the same.

Not to hijack this thread - but conservatives (perhaps because of their Ayn Rand-imitating, teenage-like obsession with "individualism") have a huge habit of pretending that certain groups do not, in general, behave in certain ways or share certain ideals. This is intellectually disingenuous.
Nobody has ever attempted to say that being a member of a certain group prescribes, without alteration, a certain type of behavior. But to try to pretend that groups do not often have broad, shared interests is beyond ridiculous.
It is not controversial or fallacious to say that the vast majority of social conservatives are opposed to gay rights. Why? Because the vast majority of social conservatives are, in fact, opposed to gay rights:

Isn't it generally assumed when one calls themself "Conservative", they typically fall into that entire mold - Christian, votes Republican, opposes abortion and gay marriage, etc.?
Aside from Log Cabin Republicans, the label Conservative rarely is associated with any other overarching viewpoint.
Fiscal conservatives don't usually call themselves conservative. For example, my friend is a raging liberal and a fiscal conservative. But he would label himself liberal.
Yes, I realize i'm generalizing, but in my experience this scenario plays out more often then not in reality.

No, absolutely not..You just gave the perfect example: your friend, who is a liberal, is fiscally conservative. That does show both sides. You have no idea how many conservatives do not fit your mold. Again you are talking ultra conservatives. My husband is a conservative as is my son in law, but neither are opposed to gay rights or abortion (in some cases) and our son in law certainly isn't a Christian, he is Jewish. His daughter is an agnostic and very much a Republican. We happen to belong to a pretty fundamentalist church but there are many members, though Christian are not Social conservatives or they are not when it comes to things like gay rights. Remember, I am talking about even here in AR. I would add, most of these I am talking about would list themselves as conservatives, me included. Yes, I fall closer to libartarian, but I certainly think of myself as a conservative or moderate conservative.
We will have to agree to disagree on this, but I can assure you a large number of conservatives are not anti gay.
No, I am not: I am saying Liberals have a habit of lumping people together, as in using Republican and conservative in the same frame, I do not consider Democrats and liberals as the same. This is my point, there are various levels of conservative, libartarians, independents, Rrpublicans, etc. Fiyero, though now back trackly a little has said Republicans are conservatives and conservatives are opposed to gay rights and abortion.
@FlGator -- Of course there are conservatives that are extremely against gay rights. But remind me...... didn't black churches (and demographically speaking, African Americans tend to vote Democrat) organize to vote in Prop 8 in California?
I guess neither party is clear cut.....
