You're making another assumption here. You're assuming that people buy hybrids only to save money. In many, if not most cases, this is false.
Many people who buy hybrids do so because it allows them to give a lot less money to the oil industry over the life of the vehicle than they would if they bought a non-hybrid.
Many people buy hybrids so they look cool in front of their progressive friends.

Last time I checked, this was a FREE country. That means free to purchase whatever vehicle I want to. I'm sick of the progressives regulating my freedoms.

If you drive 10,000 miles per year at 8 mpg, you use 1250 gallons of gas. If you pay an average of $4/gallon for that, that's $5k per year.
If you replace that with a Ford Taurus that gets 24 mpg you will use 466 gallons...working out to about $1666 per year-- a savings of $3000 or so.
One of my cars is a 1999 Ford Taurus. It's worth probably about $2k. He does have a point that you should perhaps ditch the gas guzzler and upgrade to a more efficient car, but of course that's not going to be reasonable to go buy a new car.
So, while he may have been partially correct he looked like an idiot making the comment.
The man has no clue! When a person asked about high gas prices, this was his answer; "trade in your car"...does he really think that will save you money?
He has no clue that most times you first lose money and in the end it will take a long time to get that back...similar when you buy a hibrid...
Calculate how long it will take with the higher price to buy that car, to get really a break and start saving on gas....that takes years!
I say; "Trade in this president!"

I find this to be an absurd criticism of a man who is successfully digging this country out of the huge hole created by Bush and the GOP over 8 years. I really thought you had more on the ball than this. Jesus Christ, man.
He's right about trading in the car. It's an option and a good one too.
