There is an interesting thread right now in the General U.S. forum that is comparing U.S. ghettos to third world ghettos, with the general consensus that third world ghettos make U.S. ghettos look like the middle class. But what if, as many conservatives desire, we eliminated or at least drastically reduced welfare programs and public housing, would our ghettos turn into third world slums? Would you be willing to live in a country like that for the sake of reducing spending?

Ghetto residents would turn Beverly Hills into a third world slum in less than a year. It's not the area, or the infrastructure, it's the society that lives there. Welfare has lead to the breakup of famailies, the dependancy and lack of personal responsibility that created the ghetto condition. Our ghettos have more fancy cars, dvd players, $200 sneakers and probably booze than any 3rd world one. More welfare only would make it worse.
The problem is the self segregation of blacks and the segregation brought about by Federal or State housing.
For one, we can't afford to pay for anyone's life anymore unless they are massively disabled.
We should have a 6 month limit to social programs unless there are extraordinary problems.
Government is the problem. Like a drug they have been financing ghettos (of all nationalities).
People used to go to charities and church. Those people would help, help them find work, or shame them if they were just lazy good for nothings.
Our current system doesn't work.
After 6 months there should be harsher living conditions that aren't fun so people would want to get off the system.
We should also regularly drug test those collecting government support. If positive, off the dole.

ghettos...? Where do you live where there are still ghettos?

Muhammad Ali in a biography I saw last night on ESPN classic said you could put blacks in a new area tomorrow and they would turn it into a ghetto in a week.
I thought that was a shocking statement.

I guess there should no longer be areas with ghettos since the left has fleeced the 'rich' for so long to fund their entitlment programs, huh?
