Following on the passage of a single-payer healthcare system in Vermont (awaiting the governor's signature), Bernie Sanders and Jim McDermott issued a news release announcing their Medicare-for-All bill:
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced today that he introduced legislation to provide health care for every American through a Medicare-for-all type single-payer system.
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) filed a companion bill in the House to provide better care for more patients at less cost by eliminating the middle-man role played by private insurance companies that rake off billions of dollars in profits.
The twin measures, both called the American Health Security Act of 2011, would provide federal guidelines and strong minimum standards for states to administer single-payer health care programs

Most Progressives, myself included, felt the Obama plan didn't go far enough. The intention was good, and there are some genuinely important pieces in it, but once the Public Option came off the table (in another cave to the GOP) it essentially became a handout to the Insurance Companies.
Mandates without a public option are merely handouts to the same insurance companies that have been denying coverage and very often flat-out-screwing people once they become sick.
l don't think this legislation has a prayer of passing but I applaud my Senator Bernie Sanders and Rep. Jim McDermott for at least trying.

medicare is an 80/20 and you have to either out of pocket or BUY a private supplemental insurance..it therefore CAN NOT be defined as a singlepayer
1. medicare is not 100% like medicaid...so PEOPLE would be faced with a 20% bill. and NEEDING to buy suplemental isnurance just like our elderly get screwed on everyday
2. medicare THIS YEAR cost over 550 billion dollars..and that is NOT covering its people at 100%.....and yes we all know the elderly are the most costly demographic
3. the COST of a UHC with 100% coverage would be anywhere between 2.5 to 5 trillion A YEAR...meaning the 80% coverage would cost 2 to 4 trillion dollars a year. to cover the entire population of 315 million USA citizens
4. of that 2-4 trillion (2.5 to 5 trillion@ 100% coverage) about 800 billion is already in the budget(the 500 billion for medicare and the 300 billion for medicaid) so the actual ADDITIONAL cost would be only 1.2 to 3.2 (1.7 to 4.2) trillion dollars
5. of that 1.2 to 4.2 trillion dollars. that means the 115 million taxpayers (number of 1040's filed with thee IRS) would EACH be stuck with 10,400 to 36500 dollar tax bill.
can you afford an ADDITIONAL 10k to 35k taxbill....I think not

I agree....and Sanders is awesome, he actually fights for average middle class Americans!. Heard him speak many times and it's always the voice of reason and practicality.

so then you admit that medicare does a great job considering they only insure the mostly "costly demographic" ..... and that with only 3-4% administration fees...
think how much better it'd be if everyone (younger, healthier, don't need the doctor as much) could by into it!!!!
anyone in the insurance industry will tell you those who don't file as many claims help prop up i.e. socialize to use some people's terms, the others who need more care.
but then again I thought the gov't couldn't do anything cost effective or right? Opps.
