I hear many people claim that high wage earners don't pay their fair share as compared to lower wage earners? I would like to understand what people think is a fair share of income taxes to the Federal Govt. A few questions to think about -

1. Some argue a flat or fair tax? Is a certain % fair to everyone? If not, why?
2. Should people pay for the value of the services they are provided instead of paying a % or increasing % based on income? So, if a high wage earner pays 50K in Fed taxes, why would that not be a fair share for the servies they recieve (police, fire, courts, military, etc.) as compared to low wage earner who maybe pays 5K? Would a high wage earner actually be getting the value of their tax dollar?
3. Is there a magic number that is fair? Do people really believe that all income above the mysterious 250K mark should be given back to the Government?
4. Are you a high or low wage earner, as it would seem logical to distinguish between those who are being told they aren't paying enough versus those who are asking for more of their services to be subsidized.
5. Are there incentives that should be provided for those who are asked to pay more to gain value for what they are paying for (so if someone pays 50K vs. 5K) are there other incentives that would show value - such as being able to drive in the commuter lane during rush hour if alone, jumping to front of the line at DMV, shorter Hospital waits, etc.
6. Is a better solution to a mismatch in revenue/spending to expand the number of people who pay income taxes to make things more fair - since they also recieve Govt. services?

Thanks

Fair share would be what it was under Clinton...and lower than it was under Reagan.

Here are the top marginal tax rates and the last teensy bar on the right is what Obama has proposed and what has sent right wingers into hysterics.

What is a "fair share"? The share that represents how much protection you recieve from the government. If you have a lot of wealth you should apy a substantial tax to protect that wealth thorugh the Law. If you have very little and should pay very little or nothing for getting nothing.

Please search for GregW and Taxes for what I consider a fair taxation plan.

ok, as top marginal tax rate, is their an income cut off for that? It would then be 39.6%. WOuld that be indexed over time to something like inflation or GDP to keep lower earners from moving the bracket over time?

Expand the number of people who pay income tax? That is, raise most people's taxes? Yeah good luck with that.

I was loking for sepcifics. How do you define "protection" from the Govt. I seriously doubt the Govt provides that much more protection to a higher wage earner than a low wage earner.

So it sounds like a double standard, it seems to be ok to raise taxes on one group, but not on another - even if the group payng is not geting incremental value for the dollars they are being asked "to invest".

Fair share is a term used by people who are interested in controlling incomes, money and supporting government programs. They want to make sure they are getting everyone's money allowed by the IRS as possible and they usually prefer its the rich need to pay more. Thou they have no problem asking the middle class and others to pay full price for the great and wonderful government solutions that make everyone's life so much better. :-) They promote government power and theft via force only asking you pay your fair share of the services needed to the GREAT SOCIETY of progressive and communist/marxist idealogy. They are not intersted in proven positive government results, in fact they seek to expand the size and power of government and truly believe that they can make the America a wonderful place for everyone if given more. In fact if you don't agree you are just part of the problem and sharing and fair share is a major part of our education system for that reason alone. They prefer to change the constitution or ignore it when it deems fit and or add more rights to other peoples money and expand the size of government. These people want to control your spending, your habits, your needs and or wants to put society above yourself even if it means to destory your own dreams and or liberty. Liberty to these people comes when government has provided it for you. In fact if you are to succeed they deem you another factor to the problem and must have taken and or used other people to get where you are. Ignoring all those individuals who create music, art, science and or even technology as if they stole and or didnt earn what they got. No matter the work ethic and or decisions you can't put yourself or your family above those who don't work, do nothing and wish to live off the system and or control the system. To be free of them you must first understand them. They breed and spread their message in schools where public education is used as a tool to brainwash children into thinking their dreams and future is tied to the performance of others and right to others PROPERTY!

There is nothing fair about taxes.
There is nothing fair about stealing
There is nothing fair about having the rich, poor and middle class as government to steal from each other.
The only fair and senseable solution is to ask people to TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES FIRST,
Second to help your neighbor with free will and when in if anytime government needs money it should be a LOW FLAT RATED NUMBER FOR DEFENSE AND BASIC NEEDS OF LAW AND ORDER and DEFENSE!!
Example a 3% FEDERAL SALES TAX no other taxes, fees and or stealing!

Fairness is redefined, WORDS are redefined in order to make you think FAIR means what they want to you to think it means.
Fairness is when you can have the freedom to reject all forms of controls on my living and property without the threat of a government agency with guns and force no matter what your economy status is.
