There's a huge difference between fighting for your country and the glorification of senseless violence and abuse of women. I don't even know how you can make that comparison.

In our household we've never listened to violent rap songs....that is my choice.....as a parent I shielded my youngsters from these violent lyrics....they learned to love the original rapper(Bob Dylan)...and now that they're older they have no inclinations to listen to most rap.....While I don't agree with the violence depicted in some rap songs...I also know that if people refused to listen...the debate would be over.I also agree with you reconmark...this type of music can indeed be influencial to young minds with no adult guidance....and as a society we need to realize this......personally this kind of rap crap ain't what I call music....just hate propaganda....a blight on the music industry.

It's entertainment. Should we boycott violent movies because they're violent and actually show murders? The entire rap argument is such BS. I grew up listening to rap and listen to some today just as I watch violent movies. I know it's all entertainment, that's it. Kids that take any of it seriously are not receiving the proper parenting and/or were prone to be negative either way.

I come from a generation of Whoodini, Run DMC, Sugar Hill Gang. These rappers had some profanity in their songs, but their messages as a whole was not the message of today's gangster rapper.

I still play Biggie and Tupac and they also had some profound messages, but today's young generation of gangster rapper, is nothing but a true "tom" and does nothing for us but lends a hand in escorting us to the lowest levels of behavior we can indulge in.

This is one of the leading causes of black on black crime, Teen pregnancy, disrespect of ourselves and others. I believe the only factor more powerful then this music is the absence of responsible black fathers in the home.

What responsible adult would let their children listen to this mess??
Dr. Watkins is on point but I'm not sure why anyone would listen to Biggie and Tupac. They spouted similar nonsense, especially Biggie. Here is a line from one of his "songs"...

Don't they know my ***** Gutter ****in' kidnap kids?
**** 'em in the ass, throw 'em over the bridge.

and from another....

Had the hooker beggin for the dick
And your moms ain't ugly love my dick got rock quick
I guess I was a combination of House of Pain and Bobby Brown
I was humpin around and jumpin around
Jacked her then I asked her who's the man
She said B-I-G then I bust in her E-Y-E

Most rappers I hear are untalented, materialistic, uneducated, mysogynistic fools. I can't afford to listen to that genre to find the few who aren't.

Music is NOT just music, the sounds and lyrics of music change, affect, and minimize or maximize certain thiughts and behaviors. For those who say it's just music, you really don't understand the power or purpose of music.

D.A., MT-BC Concetta M. Tomaino
Institute for Music and Neurologic Function
Bronx - USA

".Dr. Tomaino is internationally known for her research in the clinical applications of music and neurologic rehabilitation.."

Current clinical research indicates that music and the components of music, i.e., rhythm, melody, harmony, can stimulate complex cognitive, affective and sensor motor processes in the brain, whose functions can be generalized and transferred to non-musical therapeutic purposes.

Music therapy is appropriate for all patients regardless of their functional and cognitive levels because music has the power to provoke responses in us from both our conscious and unconscious levels.

Music relaxation techniques can be used to help patients with bodily tension, agitation, and poor impulse control.

If you are continually listening to music that encourages poor impulse control, wouldn't the individual eventually display that behavior??

Music Therapy programs benefit residents who suffer from:
• Agitation/Aggressive Behaviors

Related to Cognitive Skills:
• To improve attention and focus
• To improve sequential tasks and temporal planning
• To improve on task performance
• To improve short and long term memory
• To improve complex task performance

Music and the Brain
"The human mind shuts down after three or four repetitions of a rhythm, or a melody, or a harmonic progression." Furthermore, excessive repetition causes people to release control of their thoughts. Rhythmic repetition is used by people who are trying to push certain ethics in their music.

Conclusions
One cannot deny the power of music. High school students who study music have higher grade point averages that those who don't. These students also develop faster physically. Student listening skills are also improved through music education. The top three schools in America all place a great emphasis on music and the arts. Hungary, Japan, and the Netherlands, the top three academic countries in the world, all place a great emphasis on music education and participation in music. The top engineers from Silicon Valley are all musicians. Napoleon understood the enormous power of music. He summed it up by saying, "Give me control over he who shapes the music of a nation, and I care not who makes the laws" .
Music and the Brain

Certain types of words, beats, and rhythms can be beneficial or detrimental. Every adult makes their own choices, but again why would you expose your child's mind to these influences??.

I have not suggested censorship in this thread, I don't know how it came about as an issue.

I do believe you should exercise some form of censorship in your home. Would you allow your children to view a steady diet of pornography..if not, why not??

As a heavy listener of another genre that was demonized (somewhat literally) in the 80s, heavy metal, I can't in good conscience say that rap is responsible for any violence in the black community. Who knows, maybe some idiots really do take the words to heart, but that problem lies in the PARENTS (or lack thereof). I don't go around burning churches and downing bottles of bourbon while riding a Harley (not that there's anything wrong with riding a Harley) because my parents raised me to be a good citizen and to not be so stupid as to be influenced by song lyrics.

e: That said I don't listen to rap mainly cos I just don't like it.

... rofl. The more important question you should be asking is why do the radio and mainstream record labels choose to glorify music that objectifies women and promotes violence? There's obviously rap that does not so your favorite author there should be boycotting the radio and the big wigs that figured out that Americans will eat violence and sex up 100% of the time, including in music. Those who point the finger at rap are choosing to ignore the elephant in the room: our culture tolerates violence and misogyny. If we didn't, we would not have rampant prostitution or homicide, Francis Coppola and Quentin Tarantino would never have become major cinema staples and the most popular genre in rap would not be gangsta rap. American society is addicted to violent fantasy... it's kind of what happens when your country is founded on unspeakable violence.

One of the few instances I agree with you
I hate that kind of music, it really hurts the image of all AA's because stereotyping is human and thus omnipresent.
There is no positive message anymore, just commercialized fake rage and stupid profanity...

And so you also then hate rock, country, metal etc... because of all the songs that hurt the image of all whites with the message of violence and drinking and demeaning others correct?

I hate Metal, yes, mere noise in my view. But with the other two genres I just don't see even remotely the same amount of disrespect, profanity, etc. There might be some Country, Rock and other typically white songs with worrisome lyrics, but they are not the rule at all among those genres. I totally dislike Rock and Country as well, but merely for musical reasons, not because of the lyrics.
