Hatred is believed to be a learned emotion, and recent studies have shown that racism is also learned, rather than innate. We are not born to HATE; we learn this emotion.

The below are LEARNED. The big question is: Who is teaching it to us and the new generation???

Religious and politically-based hatred
Hatred based on sexual orientation
Hate of the disabled
Racism
Sexism

We are. We keep these things alive in our own hearts/minds whether we realize it or not.

I think you are off base using the word "hatred" defined as a "strong dislike". I think more often than not the feelings have more to do with "preferences" which develop as one grows up. I have lived for 57 years beginning my life in a city that was at the end of the Underground Railroad, being a member of the Armed Forces and traveling to and living in many states to include the south. Often, what you describe as "hatred" is not like a "strong dislike" but rather a case of being unfamiliar with a certain type of person. Sometimes, one bad experience can set the trend. I just don't think that people "teach" hate unless they are morons - very foolish or stupid people. Ignorance is most likely the issue and not intended hatred except like I said when it comes to morons and, I have met a few and I freely spoke my opinion of their attitude. The word "hate" is over and mis- used.

Hmmmm, seems like a pretty broad statement.
I'd say the capacity for hatred is a characteristic of our species or else we wouldn't have a history bound by incidents involving this emotion.

Not to say we shouldn't strive to grow/evolve beyond it.

Language is a "learned" skill but intrinsic to our species. If you have two children grow up in a social vacuum they will develop their own "language" for communication.

We seem to have strong feelings against "the other." If it isn't one of us, why should we care? And if it gets in our way, then we feel obligated to mow it down, or at least diminsh its perceived importance in the greater scheme of things.

I find it funny that so many of those who feel this way are in the majority; religion, sexual oientation, physical abilities, gender (but I've met some Lesbian Separatists who can be equally as demeaning!).

Interesting.

We learn from front groups and astroturf groups which are groups designed to disseminate manipulative propaganda in order to wedge a political bias between groups of people and individuals. It's covertly perpetrated in corporations and universities. Noam Chomsky discussed all of this in his DVD Manufacturing Consent. Also known as divide and conquer.

Maybe that is the question why haven't we grown/evolved away from it??

I disagree that hatred is learned. Hatred - like in racism, sexism, etc. - yes. But not all forms of hatred. I believe that if someone was raised in a hate-free environment, then people come in and torture those they love and kill them - that the hatred would come quite naturally. Also, the quick assumption that anyone who looks like them would have to be equally dangerous. I think this is very natural and human.
