My husband & I both worked in college. It's a great concept. Pay for your own college and you are less likely to squandor the opportunity.

I know the irony of it all, imagine the poor having to work!!!!!!!!!! you do what you have to survive. Even if it means working several jobs at a time. I know plenty of young people who have.

Mixed feelings on this issue as I received Pell Grants while I attended college. They don't pay out enough to cover education however (atleast at most universities). I still had to take out boatloads of student loans and participated in work-study as well as carrying another job while in school.

For what it's worth, I'm sure the Federal Government's ROI on the Grants they paid out to me has been significant at this point with the taxes I pay out annually.

It is apparent one of the republican goal is to widen the disparity between the rich and poor. I have to laugh at the poster who posts, "they will actually have to work for it." Yea the jobs are hanging from the ceiling just pull one down and work it. Under GW Bush 800,000 jobs vanished. How many jobs have these new republicans created? Zero, nil, none and in fact have lost more jobs. There are people with BA's and BS's working at McD's and Chinamart. Just where does a college freshman work when the competition for jobs is so widespread among all age groups?

And yet I have several middle class nieces and nephews working their way through school. And their friends and neighbors are working their way through, too.

Hmmm... Personal responsibility. What a concept.

The answer to that would be, no.

Not sure how long it's been since some of you attended college, if indeed you did, but the ratio of college expense to wages is way different now than even in the 80's.

Give us some specific examples.

Since I just put two kids through college, I know what college expenses are; I know what kind of jobs college age kids can get; and I know how much time school takes and how hard that is to work around a class schedule. In fact, it was much the same when I was in college all those decades ago.
