I'm not sure of the threshold but that's exactly his proposal, why would he cry socialism?
No, that is not his proposal. He is proposing raising taxes on EVERYONE. He wants to outprice his competition trying to claw their way up to the top. He'll never support tax increases that will only affect people in his tier, the billionaire and almost billionaire class.
I am really surprised that there are so many people posting on this thread about an article that they have clearly not read! Or if they read it, the totally missed the point.
(Or maybe I shouldn't be surprised?)
Why do you feel he is a hypocrite, because he is wealthy?
i have no problem with wealth at all! (as long as it is honestly made)
did you read the article?
because he is a government stooge, praising both bush and obama, and stating that the US deserves its AAA rating (REALLY?), for his moody's involvement, for GEN RE, for hypocrisy stock dilution and derivatives, for a lot of other reasons.
for talking all the time about giving, but hanging onto his money-no, actually INCREASING his wealth personally.
Look, Warren, you've engineered a fortune. Stop trying to reengineer society. You feel guilty about being so rich? Quit taking it out on the people who want to become rich.
buffett also favors a VAT tax for americans.

Warren Buffett on taxes: "Stop Coddling the Super Rich"
Interesting letter to the New York Times this week from mega-rich famous investor Warren Buffett, who, despite that it would increase his own taxes drastically, writes reasons the top few percent of the wealthy should be paying more taxes than they do. He lists past tax rates, and numbers supporting this.
Whatever your opinion, this may be an interesting read:

Actually he already does but that is not the point.
"At the urging of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, forty of the world's richest families have promised to give at least half of their fortunes to philanthropy.
By taking the "Giving Pledge," the forty families or individuals, most of whom are billionaires, are promising a collective sum of at least $125 billion to charitable causes, based on Forbes' current estimates of their net worth and other data sources."
Actually. Giving money to the Gates foundation, isnt giving money to the federal government. In fact it does just the opposite, since charitable gifts are a tax write off.
The tax changes he is proposing, if enacted will increase his taxes, it's refreshing to have someone in the top 1%, critical of a system that benefits him and other billionaires to a large extent. I could understand critcism of his statement by billionaires, but it's hard to understand the level of anger by some middle class individuals.
The changes would NOT increase his taxes. Buffet wants taxes raised on short term investments, by his own admission, but Buffet's investments are classified by the IRS as long term, i.e. over 365 days. Buffet will tell you directly that his investments are for decades and he rarely if ever sells because he doesnt want tax liabilities. Enacting these changes would not affect his tax liabilities one iota, in fact it would make it harder for other "investors", i.e. day traders and that, to compete against him.
By the way Forbes needs to come up with some better writers, you don't gain anything unless you cash it in, unfortunately Buffett does cash in lare amounts of stock each year. Yes hold an asset until after you're dead to avoid taxes, .
Buffet does not. Buffet DONATES his stock shares to the Gates foundation which allows him to fully deduct the contribution as a tax write off, and then the Gates foundation sells the large amounts of stock each year, hiding the taxable gains.

i posted earlier about the gates charity fraud with bono.
you would think that a man who got incredibly wealthy from the generosity of americans would think a little more about the funding that he does, or maybe he has thought it out....
If we stop coddling the rich, then what's the point of having the Republican Party?
