There was a time when conservatism meant preserving what is best of the past and of tradition. Of particular concern was preserving virtue. How could anyone be against that?
Where it started to go wrong was when it decided to preserve things that were not worth keeping, and going to any length to accomplish this. In other words, they threw virtue out the window. Not that they did not give it lip service, with reference to family values and patriotism. One need only look beneath the rhetoric to see what they were really supporting, but many never looked, and whenever things got difficult, conservatives merely shouted louder, sounded angrier, and insisted that their two dimensional arguments reflected something fundamental.

Conservatism has always been a reactive ideology, reactive to perceived cultural threats. Today, just about anything suggested by a liberal is perceived as a threat of existential extreme. This is just another way in which conservatives undercut their own credibility. While this may have worked for a while, the paranoia they generate is losing its appeal, exciting a shrinking circle of extremists. Sort of like Chicken Little warning that the sky is falling. Some will believe it. Most will not. This is leaving an indelible stain of distrust on conservatism.
Seeds For Thought.

Today's liberals are conservative and today's conservatives are radicals.

Liberals want to protect and strengthen our social institutions for the betterment of society while radicals want to dismantle them and sell them off to their buddies.

Liberals honor separation of power. We believe in strong labor policies and democracy. Radical believe in agglomeration of corporate power.

Liberals recognize equality, radicals want to persecute a segment of the popular based on their sexual orientation.

Liberals value life while radical start unjust wars in order to kill women and brown babies.

Liberals value rule of law, radicals value secret prison and torture.

Liberals value health and want to extend health care cheaply and universally as possible, radical only want a select few to afford health care.

I really don't know what happened to Conservatism. Maybe Cheney hate it heart when he was hungry one night.

In case you didn't notice, and I'm quite sure you don't care, you don't have any money for those programs. It wouldn't be so bad except you never had the money for those programs. Medicare is unfunded to the tune of $80 trillion dollars and the other two, SS and the prescription drug program, bring that total to $115 trillion.

If you sold every single thing the entirety of America owns privately you'd still be short $39 trillion dollars for all of those programs.

And you you still have a national deficit so large that if you cut your government in half right this second it would take you 60 years to pay back your debt.

Again, your fantasy land ideas are coming to a screeching halt because of the realities of the real world. You've robbed your entire country's future for your own personal gain and "security."

Republicans cut taxes and increased spending over the last three decades all while running a great economy into the ground. Now that their economic policies have led us to ruin, they want to propagate lies in order to attack the elderly and the poor.

Conservatism has lost its soul.

Okay, lets look at this.

Lets say the national debt is entirely the GOP's fault.

That means of the $130 trillion we're in the hole the GOP is responsible for $15 trillion right off the bat.

Let's also say that because of the prescription drug program that's also a GOP epic fail.

That means that $35 trillion of the $130 trillion is the GOP's fault.

"Your" side is responsible for $95 trillion of that $130 trillion.

You're not going to claim the grotesque society and SS are GOP ideas are you?

Of course this doesn't even look at the nearly $100 trillion in unfunded liabilities the states have in pensions and other obligations.

Must be more "GOP union thuggery" at work with all their "freebies" they want and $50/hr union jobs picking up trash with $4 million retirement plans.

Didn't Obama just extend tax cuts?

Weren't Democrats still in control of the House when he did that?

Wasn't the sudden urgency to strike a deal with the lame ducks intended to allow him to spend more borrowed money and avoid having to deal with the newly elected Republicans sent to DC specifically to stop the Democrats deficits spending?

Just for fun, could you identify some of the "Republican" policies which have "led us to ruin"?
