Libertarians could be considered socially liberal as they feel any kind of big government bill to tell people what to do is anti-constitutional and anti-freedom, they are not fiscally conservative nor liberal.
While they have very far right stances such as ending medicare, medicaid, social security, etc,.. they also have very liberal stances such as defunding and ending all wars, defund the military, stop handouts to corporations, getting special interest out of the white house, ,..

Otherwise the most fiscal conservative and social liberals are blue dog democrats.

I don't know why gay marriage gets singled out. The govt is either in or out. Personally I don't think the govt should be involved in marriage at all. Get married in a church if you want. Everyone goes to a lawyer to figure out how you want the legal/money to work. No differences in taxes, no breaks for having kids (we have plenty of people and I don't see people quitting having kids, why the incentive?) No social security for non working spouses.

Nightflight - I hope by 'legions of fatherless children' you are including the legions of multiple generation welfare white trash

Libertarianism-proper takes no ethical opposition to the mere existence of "social insurance programs," per se. They merely take objection to the manner in which they are implemented.

The primary concern is that the implementation should allow each citizen to opt-in to such a program if they so choose, and to leave alone those citizens who choose to be part of the program.
