The Tacoma Teacher's union is still striking, despite a judge's order to return to the classroom. For the 3rd day in a row, 28,000 children are missing school in Washington State's 3rd largest school district.

Even the editorial page of the Seattle Times says they have gone too far:

Quote:
TACOMA teachers defying a Pierce County Superior Court judge's order to return to work should be fined until they do so. The union and the district had all summer to negotiate. Students are now being denied their right to learn.

The union's defiance of Chushcoff's order reeks of arrogance.

Bad behavior only worsened when Chushcoff said he found a printed sign attached to his garage door demanding that he, "Support Tacoma teachers and their students." How inappropriate! Such intimidation tactics ought to be swiftly rebuffed.

Teachers set examples in the classroom and out. It is impossible for them to teach students about obeying the law when they blatantly defy a judge's order to return to work. Return to work or face fines.

heck they should be fired and replaced. More than enough teachers looking for work to replace them. what makes them so special that they cant be replaced with teachers that want to work.

UNIONS don't have to obey the law. As long as Obama is in control, unions can do what they wish, with impunity. Unions have already paid their way.......

I also think the state should force people to work under conditions they don't like. I'm willing to bet they do a great job while doing it, too.

Teach a man to fish and he eats for life. Pay a man to fish, and if the conditions suck, heck just keep fining him until he starts fishing again.

And day 4 of 28,000 children staying at home while the teachers strike.

The average salary for a Tacoma teacher is $63,793.
Average salary in Tacoma is $38,922.

So the teachers are making almost $25,000 more than the average worker, while working 2 months less.
And while they strike, parents who make less than them are having to pay for extra child care for their children.

I have tons of respect for teachers, but this is crazy. I agree with the Seattle Times- this reeks of arrogance.

How about docking the teachers pay and sending the bill for daycare to the union?

I mean "even" left leaning editorial pages are saying the teacher's union is wrong.

As well as Dem. elected officials:

Rep. Connie Ladenburg, D-Tacoma: I think all of us should honor the courts and the courts’ decision – and especially teachers, because they are supposed to be setting an example. They’re breaking the rule of the law by going against what the judge says.

Rep. Laurie Jinkins, D-Tacoma: I don’t think government employees have the right to strike. I think the law is actually fairly clear about that.

Sen. Debbie Regala, D-Tacoma: Kids are certainly being impacted in negative ways. I just wish they could find a way to continue to teach and continue to have discussions going on to solve this problem.

And other union members:
I appreciate the contributions of labor unions and I am currently a member of one. But I will not respect or condone any unions or their members who engage in illegal activities, such as the Longshoremen’s recent bouts of violence, vandalism and wildcatting, or this current teacher’s union defiance of a lawful court order.

The Seattle Times actually called out the union today for lying. The union is publicly saying that they are fighting for smaller class sizes. And quotes from teachers have asked parents to be patient so they can fight for smaller class sizes to give the children the attention they deserve. But the union isn't asking for smaller class sizes. It is asking for more pay for larger classrooms. How will that help increase the individual attention?

The Seattle Times calls on the union to "be honest."

It kind of depends on which Law is preeminent. In this case it is not entirely clear.

Right of teachers and other employees to strike
