I don't hate Apple, and believe me I know many apple fans who are as conservative as people come. I've never liked PCs, and I don't think I'd ever be able to get used to one. I recently had to get a new computer and someone asked me, "what about a PC?" I hadn't even thought about that, and I don't see myself considering one any time soon. Apple just runs in the family, you know? My mom had her first Apple in the '80s, and we've been Apple people ever since (she also invested half a million $ in Apple in '07.. you do the math).
That said, there is a cultish devotion displayed by many toward Apple that strikes me as a tad hypocritical and silly. I went to Macworld in San Francisco once (mom went every year) and some of the people were just comical. Apple clothing, apple tattoos, apple everything. I don't really have a problem with that, as it was at the very least entertaining. But when you see hippies and hipsters display resentment toward nearly every other corporation, and yet dream of having a job at the Apple store, it's disconcerting to me. And more annoying is when someone who with disdain for religion demonstrates cult-like loyalty to a company, as if that's a better cause. As far as that goes, it's the Apple lovers, not the company, that annoy me.
Apple is indeed a pretty liberal company though. I mean, they're based in the SF area, they were founded and lead by a pretty liberal (at least in his personal life) guy, they'e endorsed liberal positions (anti Prop 8), and so on. I went to Apple headquarters once, and being a car guy, I checked out the parking lot while I was there. It was filled with foreign compacts and sedans; Priuses, Volkswagens, Minis, Volvos, BMWs, etc., and only a couple domestic cars in the whole parking lot. You could tell most of the people who worked there were young, urban dwellers. Regardless, I don't really care. I still like their products. Apple has even been criticized by liberals for not being more environmentally friendly, because they held it to a higher standard. But really? How could a trendy computer company whose niche is selling stylish, high-end products to those who want the latest & greatest possibly be more environmentally friendly than the competition?
The iMac is the best computer I have ever owned. Apple may be a behemoth that throws its weight around the tech world, but I love this beautiful, beautiful machine!
Rush Limbaugh is a huge Apple fan and has been for a long time. He was an admirer of Steve Jobs (in spite of Jobs' liberalism). I was a big fan of Apple in the early days and had an Apple II. In the beginning, the Apple model was openness and tinkerer-friendly The Apple II had schematics and the source code for the bios printed in the back of the user manual. Later they took a more closed, proprietary approach and that's when I got off the Apple bandwagon and never bothered to get back on.
The better question is why do yuppie liberals love to support a company that profiteers from sweatshop labor and then turn around and ***** about the wealthy while demanding more equitable income distribution and better labor standards?
It's liberals who hate the rising of the lower class of brown people, not conservatives,
