Take away his use of the F word which always elicits a big laugh from his handpicked audience and is guests and it appears to me that he is very much a political pundit. Of course, he hides behind the comedian title when faced with answering my question.
Both being that politics and politicians nowadays are a joke.
In all seriousness though he is what his audience wants him to be in their minds. Some see him as just a comedian. Some see him as a political pundit and some as both.

Play his videos on youtube and ask him questions, see if you answes you. I don't think the OP should take it personal, I get the same results. It's not just Maher, it's everyone on youtube.
I have read that he is described as a "political satirist" and I believe that is apt. He creates satire out of political goings on. Not really a comdian and not a political pundit either.
