The Los Angeles Police Department will soon start ignoring California state law, which requires police to impound the vehicles of unlicensed drivers for 30 days.
The majority of unlicensed motorists in Los Angeles are immigrants who are in the country illegally and have low-income jobs. The LAPD says the state's impound law is unfair because it limits their ability to get to their jobs and imposes a steep fine to get their car back.
hmm...
Also from the article, unlicensed drivers are 5 time more likely to be involved in fatal crashes, and more likely to flee the scene of the accident.
MY biggest question is, if they are here ILLEGALLY AND driving without a license, why is it even being allowed. If they are here illegally, impound the vehicle, arrest the person, and deport them. What part of ILLEGALLY In OUR COUNTRY do people have a hard time understanding. People who are willing to thumb their nose at our basic laws for immigration, illegally drive vehicles, 5 time more likely to kill someone in an accident, it would seem to me a simple matter. Arrest, impound, deport, done.
So illegals are treated differently than citizens. And this is fair ?
What about US citizens that have low wage jobs, a license and a vehicle..do they get their vehicle impounded ?

I can't answer if it's ONLY illegal citizens they are allowing to keep their vehicles or not, but they DO say it's UNFAIR to illegal citizens. I am not sure why it less fair to an illegal citizen who is broke, and more fair to a legal citizen who is broke, but in all fairness, driving without a license means driving without insurance, since I am unaware of ANY insurance company that will insure an unlicensed driver.
Which means, when they slam into your car, you have to have it covered, your insurance goes up, you pay any deductible, and if G_d forbid your vehicle is totaled, and you owe more on it than it's worth, guess who gets stuck...
What I'm getting from this is they will be doing this for anyone:

As long as drivers can produce some form of I.D., proof of insurance and vehicle registration, they'll be allowed to keep their car. Police Chief Charlie Beck insists that it's simply leveling the playing field.
Having said that since it's the illegal immigrants that are not going to have a license...........
