Don't quite see the connection between football and bike riding.
Anyhoo ---- Here in Japan, everybody rides bikes. Everyday. Everywhere. NOBODY wears helmets. Instead, they avoid having accidents. There's a novel concept that has yet to occur to most Americans.
And the Japanese are considered pretty intelligent people. Not many fatties, either...

yeah, those Sumu wrestlers are really some slender fit guys........
Just kidding.. I have always admired Japan and it's culture.

The connection was head injuries. I used a football player I know as an example of the seriousness of second impact syndrome. Helmets (such as bike helmets) protect skulls and brains from closed head injury.
Remember when they started putting the PVC pipes on the swingset chains? That pissed me off.
Yeah I remember that...Which reminds me of another favorite activity from my childhood that I think is sadly disappearing. Today most swing sets I see can barely get four feet off the ground. It used to be they set up swing sets so you could clear a good 7-10' with a sandbox positioned nearby. I had so much fun jumping off the swings into the sandbox alas that is no more.

Used to be able to swing high and flip upside down.
Did anyone else ever jump off the barn with a sheet as a parachute??
Nope, but I remember in fall as an incentive for raking all the leaves we could put them into a pile under the treehouse and jump out of the tree house into a massive pile of leaves. My friends also had a giant trampoline at their place and we used to put that right up against the shed and jump off the shed onto the trampoline that was also very fun.
