Since you're a doctor, this story from my mother might interest you. My mom said that when she was growing up, the "second summer" of a child's life was considered a dangerous time. The child wasn't breast-feeding any more, and in summer time a lot of food became contaminated due to lack of refrigeration. Kids died of food poisoning. Breast feeding provides a clean source of food.

So can I. In chronological order:

My grandmother, while breast feeding my mother.

My mother, while breast feeding me.

Me, while breast feeding my daughter.

My daughter is getting married in Sept. I wonder if she'll continue the cycle.

The bold has been answered well by a couple of other posters. I work in a pediatric practice. We do not recommend cow's milk until after a year of age. If a mom must stop breast feeding before a year, formula is the recommended replacement. It (formula) at least makes an attempt at trying to be like breast milk.

Why shouldn't doctors/nurses recommend what they think is right? If someone is dead-set against breast feeding, it does no good to "make" them do it, but if the patient asks, the response should be that breast is best.

Were you on the cover of Time?

The article is showing an extreme. You simply fall into that category
because not many woman in America breast feed their baby till
3 1/2 years of age. It might be the norm in impoverished countries
for nutritional and economic reasons. But not here.

The mother referenced in the article was breast fed until she
was six years old, herself. That's not the norm either. And she
admits it in the article. Most of us do actually go beyond the pic.
We read the article...

Don't worry though - her 15 minutes of fame will end,
and peeps will move along
Obviously, I was not on the cover of Time and I was talking about why everyone feels compelled to judge decisions other people make when raising their children. As someone who did breastfeed until my daughter was 3 1/2, I do tend to take the following comments personally:

I'm all for mothers' breastfeeding if that's what they what. But there is a limit. From like 3-5 kids are 25-what 55 lbs. After about 15lbs and when they're tall enough to reach a 5'0 person's hips they do NOT need to be hanging off your boob.

I'm sorry but if the kid is old enough to say "Mommy, I'm hungry" then he/she does NOT need to be coming to your breast.

If you want them to have breastmilk then pump it. At that age, with teeth, they don't need to be hanging off your boob.

Pump and put in a sippy cup. It's the same milk.

The process of breastfeeding them as the get older is just twisted. The milk is fine but sucking on a breast after infancy is

Does anyone have any decency left to know this is putting down women and motherhood. Happy Mothers Day from Time ragazine and tells you, you are not woman enough to be the extreme wierdo in this picture. That is Times message to all women.

God help us if this is accepted as normal.

Why doesn't this mom just do her thing?

If it's really just about bonding with her child, she doesn't need to broadcast something so personal to the rest of the world.

But it isn't about that is it. She has an agenda for the rest of the world.
Actually, I agree with you here. It's part of our "I'm right and you're wrong" culture. Breastfeeding until your kid is 4 doesn't make you a good mom, but it doesn't mean you're a bad mom or a weirdo if you do it. Why is it so hard to see that there are lots of viable choices when it comes to raising children and why can't we support each other in our efforts?

LOL

I got pregnant with boy #4 while I was nursing boy #3 (they're 16 months apart). I continued nursing boy #3 throughout my pregnancy (he was having no part of weaning at that time). And, for a few months, I breastfed both of them - it's called "tandem nursing" and was the one and only time I was ever "uncomfortable" breastfeeding. But I did it because my toddler still needed it.

And before anyone starts assuming that that toddler grew up with "attachment" issues - he is now 23 years old, married, a supervisor on his job (has been since he was 19, the youngest supervisor ever for the company), works full time and goes to college full time, getting straight A's.

About the picture - apparently it was meant to be provocative and get people talking about it (and buying the magazine). But the bottom line is that it really is NO ONE else's business how long a mother chooses to breastfeed her child or children. Each of my five children nursed for different lengths of time because they are all individuals who had individual "needs" when it came to nursing. My first one weaned himself - to a cup - at nine months; my youngest nursed until he was almost four. Those times were right for each of them (and the three in between who all weaned at different ages).

I find the judgmental attitude of a lot of posters here, who apparently now want to dictate how long a mother breastfeeds her child, to be quite offensive. I'll say it again - it is no one else's business besides the mom and what she feels is best for her baby/toddler/child.

In some places kids are potty trained at 18 months while we still have 3 year olds in diapers. If you want to start throwing stones, how serendipitous so long as our 3 year olds have the gravels.

Or how about when you see a 3 1/2 year old in an umbrella stroller, feet dragging, with a bottle?

Now THAT is disgusting....

What is perverted about breastfeeding? The fact that you see breastfeeding as perverted is an issue that is worth exploring and suggests that you are hiding some extremely traumatic experiences from your past.
This issue further reveals how uncomfortable conservatives are with freedom and demonstrates how they want to control everything. The conservative mind is a very sick mind indeed.

That pic is still going to be around and public domain (for all practical purposes) when the kid enters school. I don't envy him.
