Veteran hard line law-and-order pro-War on Drugs conservative Democratic Texas Congressman, Silvestre Reyes, was defeated in the primary by El Paso City Councilman Beto O'Rourke, a prominent supporter of marijuana legalization who sees ending the War on Drugs as a necessary move to prevent the sort of violence taking place in Mexico from spreading to America. In that district, winning the Democratic primary effectively means victory in the general election.

Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas) defeated by Beto O’Rourke - The Washington Post

Glad to see a Drug Warrior turned out of Congress. With Ron Paul retiring, O'Rourke can be Texas' biggest champion of marijuana legalization.

It's actually possible that the defeat of Reyes had more to do with accusations of corruption and special contracts for his family members more than El Pasoans' eagerness to legalize all drugs. However the Mexican cartels would be very in favor of legalization of all drugs in the USA and may be gaining power in El Paso.

There is no reason that the cartels would not continue to supply every kind of drug since they have the meth labs, and control the cocaine and heroin shipments from S. America.

O'Rourke may not be the Obama of the pro-drug side after all:

National Media Focus On O'Rourke's Stance On Marijuana Legalization - News Story - KVIA El Paso

EL PASO, Texas -- National news media are focusing heavily on Beto O'Rourke's stance on marijuana legalization, despite the fact O'Rourke said he will not champion the issue.

"What I have promised the people of El Paso is I am not running to legalize marijuana.

O'Rourke said the pot issue is making headlines because "it's something that's sensational for national writers to look at."

You mean like how the Prohibition gangsters were in favor of legalizing alcohol?

Capone donated money to "dry" candidates and rewarded politicians who supported alcohol prohibition. In general, the Prohibition mobsters all knew that once Repeal happened they'd lose a ton of money.

Cartel money donated to the California Chamber of Commerce (C of C contributions can be made anonymously) helped defeat Prop 19 in California.

It has been alleged by some Arizona Republicans that the cartels have contributed to Joe Arpaio's campaigns.

Let me ask you a question. How many gangsters still run distilleries? If you legalize drugs it squeezes the criminal element out, because having the cops after you is kind of a drag on production.

If you doubt this look at the California prop 19 election. Legalization lost in the dispensary capital of Los Angeles as well as in the emerald triangle region which is one of the most prolific producers of illegal and legal pot.

People who profit off of something by virtue of legal barriers to entry that keep large legitmate business concerns away rarely want to give up that advantage.

Narcotics including marijuana will never be legalized.

Get over it.

Marijuana's not a narcotic.

If the economy continues to get worse there will be some sort of legalization. Remember that in 1929 Prohibition was said to be permanent - then the Great Depression happened. I don't see the economy getting any better any time soon. Legalizing will create jobs.

Supporters of legalization just ousted a veteran Texas Congressman and the Attorney General of Oregon for supporting the war on drugs. If more drug warriors lose their offices than politicians will change their tunes.

Marijuana was 100% legal until the early 20th century and was not federally banned until 1937. Both Jefferson and Washington grew the stuff.
