In the US the congress is almost universally reviled--with an approval rate that languishes in the low teens and-- at times-- has dipped in to the single digits. The congress has not done it's job. Agreement is almost universal.

Yet, incumbents seen to win reelection easily most of the time. Why, if congress is so bad, do we keep sending the same people back and expect a different result?

Total apathy. Voters recognize the name and just "check it off".
I must admit I'm guilty of doing this as well sometimes. There's just so many people to vote for that I don't always get time to read up on each and every one. The big ones I do, but not always the smaller ones.

Because of our 2 party system! An incumbant is the only choice, if you want that PARTY to stay in power. We need term limits for all of our elected officials....serving your country as a politician should not be a career. The folks who make our laws should be forced to leave office and live under the laws they've created....and without extensive retirement packages!!!!

I lived in the deepest blue congressional district in Brooklyn NY. I voted for his opponent every two years just so he wouldn't get a 100% vote count. He was finally out of office when Clinton appointed him as Ambassador of India.

Ignorant and apathetic constituencies who fail to know the US Constitution and fail to follow the actions and votes of those they place into positions of power.

I think most people like their representatives-- It's the OTHER guys that are a problem. Right?

I agree, the two party system certainly limits choice and cause people to vote party instead of person.

I also think to a large degree that we don't hold anyone accountable for their vote. How many people who voted us in to war in Iraq-- on both sides of the aisle-- are out of office because of it?!!??!

Nobody wants to pin congress' failures on their guy, it's always the other states' congressmen/women that are the problem. So, we re-elect the same morons time and again.
