for the most part law enforcement is by nature a reactive force. they investigate crimes, and apprehend the bad guys. but their presence can prevent crime, actually move it to a different location where there are no police.

in the end if you are in the middle of a crime, you cannot depend on the police to be right there to protect you, you have to protect yourself.

Overall cops are the good guys, though no they can't always protect you. There may also be a few bad apples in the bunch.I think hurricane Katrina and the L.A riots proves all that.

It is not the governments duty to protect me,that role only pertains to maintaining a standing military for protection against a foreign military.

There are plenty of politicians though who would love to have your protection in their hands, though it's a sham.
Do believe most police are honorable and have self control. My theory is it depends what a city's population is, crimes committed and the people involved. The disrespect for many criminals toward law enforcement and to the general population can test the patience of any human and can see where police enforcement can get sick of the criminal element and react in a negative way.I hate to see these behaviors but it can understand it happening. The way I see it, enforce the laws already in place for gun ownership. Unfortunately bad people don't abide by laws and that's much of what we see today.

They can't even protect themselves. How in the world can they be expected to protect us.

Same here. No thanks.

The Police only serve to bring in revenue to the Government-which is why they focus on lucrative drug crimes where they can go after the money, homes, cars, assets of the "criminal" and traffic/speeding laws-where they can collect revenue from the masses.

The Police do not really ever prevent violence, and often escalate it.

They are mix of both in law itself. proactive I those laws they observe and retroactive in those laws they do not. Ultimately whether in security of all type we are our greatest protection be it internet or crime. Many laws actually require the victim to file actaul charge ;other the officer can file .
