A new poll suggests that 1 in 20 Americans now call themselves atheists, a fivefold increase from the last time the survey was taken in 2005.
The Religion News Service reports that, to go along with the jump, just 60 percent of Americans now identify as religious, down from 73 percent the last time the Global Index of Religiosity and Atheism poll was taken seven years ago. The decline has also been felt in many other countries around the world, including double-digit drops in several European and North American countries.
I'm not going to say religion is outdated or anything similar to that, however, I will say that it's the logical progression as society evolves to more scientific concepts and accepts more logical conclusions.
Which religion in and of itself is a very illogical conclusion, and I say this as a religious man.
Can this be the coming of the New age of enlightenment?
Seven out of ten Americans still consider themselves religious, and three out of twenty consider themselves non-religious, but not atheists. I would not be holding my breath waiting for that "New Age of Enlightenment" if I were you.
Consider the source. That is not what the results said.
While atheists in the US increased by 4%, that is a far cry from 20%.
Early in the morning for you?
1 in 20 is 5%, not 20%. The OP never claimed 20%. And the increase is five-fold because then 1%, now 5% is five times as many.
