Do you think the Republican Party still is in touch with mainstream Americans? Or have they become more of a far-right fringe party?

I think they are not a fringe party yet, but they can never regain control over the center because their base will not stand for it. They are playing the white resentment card to its last desperate gasp.

I wouldn't say that the GOP as a whole has become extreme, but over the last twenty or thirty years has been hyjacked by a vocal minority of extremists such as the Tea Party, and bomb throwers like Newt Gingrich, Allen West, Tom DeLay, Michelle Bachmann, Sam Brownback, Rick Santorum, and Pat Buchanan. Not to mention the talk radio guys and the bloggers, who are the loudest and smallest of the vocal minority.

The fact is Romney will get at least 45% of the vote, the Republicans will keep the House and have a better than 50/50 chance of winning the Senate. For the second election in a row the Republicans will likely gain political power regardless of the outcome of the Presidential election. That hardly meets the definition of an extremist party.

If you're as far left as the current Democratic party is the Republican party might seem extreme.

The Republican ship of state now caters to the extremist and fringe elements in it, and the majority of its members are helplessly along for the ride, to sheepish to speak out, and too ideological to vote against them.

Most of the moderates and the members with common sense have left, but they were a relatively small %.

The current Democratic Party is NOT far-left. You're thinking of the Green or Communist Parties.

Not sure what on Earth gives you the impression that the Democratic Party is far left. Based on what criteria and compared to what? By world standards, our Democratic party is more like Center Right, while Republican is far far Right.
