I find this fantasy of moral decay to very annoying. This view ignores American history for nonsense.
Look in this nation, people owned other human beings it was the law of the land. In this nation, they considered human beings to be animals and treated them as such.
If this nation can survive the immorality and horror of that, then single moms having children is nothing by comparison.
I know to conservatives, somehow the enslavement of human beings is less immoral than gay marriage, but its not.

We tend to forget, or choose to ignore, our history in this country.
Social issues come first. You can't be a legitimate "fiscal conservative" or "small government conservative" while ignoring social issues.
A moral society of strong marriages, extended families, and flourishing churches needs a much smaller safety net than an amoral society of self-directed individuals pursuing their "dreams" or private interests. That's how our grandparents survived the Great Depression. This generation wouldn't last a month.
Spending is out of control because our society is crumbling. Regulations are out of control because people can't be trusted. The growth of government is out of control because Americans no longer promote the common good in their own communities. Etc.
All politics is morality, and for most people, morality is derived from religious faith or at least strengthened by it. America's government problem is at heart a religious problem.
In the end, government either supports family, faith and community or it works against it. A pretended "neutrality" always ends in hostility. Government always has been and always will be involved in the social issues. The only question is: on whose side?
That's the problem. Everyone has their own definition of moral social behavior and which social institutions they favor. There is no one size fits all for social mores.
One person's moral decay (like same-sex marriages) is another person's progress. A society is made up of a multitude of differing interests and viewpoints --- there is no ultimate moral compass.
When you not only ignore but purposely seek out and belittle both morally and legally minority groups eventually those groups raise up and fight back. You just witnessed it in the election.
If the GOP somehow someway could divorce itself from the disease of fundamental Christianity and support those minority groups that gave President Obama the presidency for another four years you could turn the party around.
This however has been a very long marriage since the animal known as Falwell got it's hands on the party in the late seventies.
This is the eleventh hour for the GOP. The constituency of such averaging 54 years of age.
The GLBT community, women, Latino's, Blacks, Asians and the majority of voters under 30 years of age have spoken.
You had decades to build inroads and relationships with these voters but you have been the enemy for years and the memories are long.
Whether you like it or not it is a different country than what your " vision " showed you.
The reality is that your vision was to never become reality.
