Either way, considering that it's California, I imagine that there are many people in jail for non violent drug offenses, who deserved shortened times. There, problem solved.
It is not a hsr when the average travel speed is 80ish mph with many stops along the way.

Care to guess what happens when "non violent" criminals are released?
Answer: violent and non violent crimes go up.

Criminals are labeled violent/non violent based on what they are convicted of. It is really easy to convict people of non violent crimes, like drug possession, because all you have to prove is person A has drugs on them, it is much harder to prove someone assaulted someone else.

According to Forbes:

Quote:
As of December 2013, China already has 11,085 kilometers of operational HSR tracks compared to the having no HSR tracks in 2000. By 2020, the Chinese ministry aims to have completed 25,000 kilometers of total HSR track, which will connect all of its major cities. Some of these lines are passenger designated lines (PDL), while others are also capable of carrying freight, known as high-speed logistics. The total cost of Chinese HSR ambitions is billed at around $300 billion USD when completed.
And the US has got how much? Tell me what if anything Obama has done about this.

So, the Bay area and LA can have HSR, and Seattle - Portland can have HSR, and the Northeast can have it, and the rest of the country can go suck eggs, right?

High speed rail should be used to connect cities that are in a regional distance from each other. Those cross country trips would have to be reserved to airline traffic.

He gave 10 billion to projects, and the initial USA National plan was the Obama administrations. If the loonies hadn't taken the house in 2010, we would have seen some systems well under way.

Yep; roads are used by those who do not pay or do not pay enough. regardless rail will have to be private or its not getting done. just as road will have to have user fees or private toll roads more and more. You want it; pay for it is new road since we have massive debt building junk to no where. The stimulus was one of those ;wasn't spent on infrastructure but went to special interest groups .

The Chinese don't mess around. While people over here are squabbling about guns and welfare, they are building giant projects for their future.

You are certainly free to invest as much of YOUR money as you like in a rail program. What's stopping you? Find some like minded people and start a passenger rail service.

Building for building's sake is a waste of money.

High speed rail systems may appeal to the public transit crowd as a way to get from major city to major city but for most of us we prefer the freedom and convenience of our own cars.
Highspeed rail in my opinion is a very large waste of tax payer dollars.
