I don't know any "gun nut" who defends the quacks. They do however, defend people's constitutional right to own firearms.

There are plenty of emotionally unstable people in this world. Even if there were no guns available these people would find a way to go on a killing spree before finally killing themselves.

Instead of blaming guns why don't folks put the blame where it belongs-

on our entitlement society that trains people to think they are magnificent unique snowflakes who deserve the best in life but when they find out that the world doesn't revolve around them they act out against others;

and the salacious media that turns criminals, murderers, and lunatics into infamous celebrities who have books and movies written about them and people write them fan letters and send them money while they're waiting on death row.

True, those nuts are out there. But it's a lot more difficult to kill large numbers of people with knives, rocks, hammers, and axes. Judging by the state of our science education in America, most who try to build bombs would be more likely to blow themselves up.

How would you suggest keeping the crazies from shooting up whatever joint they happen to frequent? They are already barred from gun ownership in many states, but in some - like AZ, for instance - the states are far behind in updating mental health records. That would be a good start, IMO, but what else?

Good, let them at least work at getting a gun instead of handing these mentally incompetent people weapons. Handing crazy people a gun is nuts, the don't have a right to own a gun if they are mentally unfit.

So you'd be happier if they used something else? What a strange outlook. People would be just as dead if he drove his car through the mall, set off a firebomb or hacked them to death with a machete. A nut in China killed 4 and stabbed 12 people in an attack in a mall using a knife, after he drove a truck through a crowd killing 3 additional people. I'm sure they're glad he didn't have a gun.

These 8 people too are surely less dead because this nute didn't have a gun. BBC News - Chinese teenager 'kills eight in knife attack'

Gun grabbers constantly repeat that line "it's more difficult to kill large numbers with xyz" but in the real world people use many things besides guns to kill just as many if not more people.

The problem isn't the tool it's the people.

The United States is almost certainly the most violent industrialized nation in the world. You can lie to yourself and say our pervasive gun culture has nothing to do with it, or you can face a littl reality.

The 2nd Amendment comes with a price.

Everything comes with a price, and definitely everything in excess. Anyone who denies this is either a fool or a liar.

Unfortunately the US Constitution does not have a clause stripping an American citizen his rights if he is certifiably insane. So we live in a nation where if you are crazy and wish to make a statement get your 15 minutes of fame you too can march down to a school, movie theater, shopping Center or your former work place shoot your way into the nations collective minds !

I'm not a gun grabber. Simple physics and biology explain the facts on how many people you can kill in a given time period with a given weapon. For instance, if your weapon is a piece of rope which you use to strangle people, it takes several minutes to strangle a person to death. By the time you had your rope around the person's neck (say, in the subway), someone would likely have tackled you and stopped the killing process.

Suppose you're using a knife? You stab or slash your intended victims. Unless you have somehow trapped the rest of your potential victims, you can't easily commit mass murder with a knife. And you could still be easily overpowered by the others.

A bomb? Most people would have to learn how to make a bomb. One mistake, and you've committed suicide. Then you have to place it without it being noticed and reported (or accidentally detonated and blowing you up), and then have a detonation mechanism (timer, cell phone, whatever). These things can fail, too.

You could run down a crowd with a vehicle. It has been done, but you have a fairly low mortality rate with that method, too. People will run when they see a car headed their way, and you can't guarantee a solid enough hit on very many people to complete your kill.

Yup, gun looks like the most efficient way to murder a large number of people and also to create terror. Crazy violent people frequently get off on the fear of others, and the feeling of control they get by causing that fear. Also, you can have many bullets and several guns on your person, which multiplies your killing power. And with a gun, you don't even have to get dirty.
