OK, you have the Berkeley council and mayor telling the US Marines they are unwanted and unwelcomed intruders to their city and actively worked to try to get them evicted from their city. Even the mayor dressed in pink and protested outside their office telling them to get out of his city. You have an organization of public school teachers and college professors whose goal is to try to prevent military recruiters from signing up any of their students. You have college professors who've attacked military recruiters' display. You have ROTC and military recruiting stations attacked and vandalized. Why this violent hatred of the US Military and does this hatred also extend to the country the military defends?
Easy. Because the military is a group of trained killers, who have been indoctrinated to be ready to kill any man, woman, or child, upon command, unquestioning, even if Americans are not in danger. That is not consistent with the morals that characterize many people who identify themselves as liberals.
The military does not "defend the country". By the stated position of the US Department of Defense, the Military defends "America's interests". Which, in almost every case, have nothing to do with defending the nation itself from an attacking enemy that can be repelled by a military defense.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
[no ellipses---this is the very first line of the summary]
The mission of the Department of Defense is to protect the American people and advance our nation’s interests.
Its so ironic that right in the middle of probably the most progressive community in the country is UC Berkley. A World class institute of Higher learning that receives a lot of money from the American Military for programs to advance warfare technology. They don't call the town BERZEKLEY for nothing. Has some great restaurants. A fantastic place to sit in a sidewalk coffee shop on a Sunday morning people watching and enjoying some very interesting conversations. If you think some of the things you read on CD are controversial head to the Free Speech Movement cafe on the Berkley campus. Enjoy a scone, a latte and listen to the very amusing and interesting conversation. To understand the other side you need to spend time with them.
To understand the other side you need to spend time with them.
To understand the other side, you have to allow yourself to become a mindless trained killer of non-threatening civilians yourself.
Why is there so much remorse among Vietnam vets? Because they are reflecting on the fact that they killed innocent human beings for no other reason than because they were trained to obey the commands of people who were lying to them.
These are the people you need to spend time with to understand.

Soooooo, what do you think the 3 Berkley alum goofballs who went hiking in Iraq and Iran are chatting about these days? Sure hope they aren't expecting the military to rescue them.

None of the Nam vets in my family have had any issues or remorse. But, I come from a long line of mindless killers. Their suffering is because the radical anti-war message told them they were horrible human beings. They received no societal support that their sacrifice was appreciated.

It isn't about hating the military.
It is about hating the policies and the sending off of youth on propaganda crap to die for CORPORATE interests. And when they come back with PTSD, by and large people stand around and say, "What a shame" and then go on their merry little ways.
You may not confuse the issue and say that if there is dislike against the policies then you dislike the men and women that serve.
My brothers are over there now and my youngest one is almost ready to graduate and the marines are sniffing around him. My father is a vet, my grandfather's were and are vet's and believe me, you don't have jack in place when they return. Why IS that? Then you might have to actually pay attention to what war does to a human being.

They went looking for trouble. The "hikers" are known pro-Syrian anti-Israel activists. They got exactly what they wanted. Their books will sell more copies and their made for T.V. movies will be more marketable with this incident as the background for their agenda.
Hitler rounded up perfectly ordinary young men, indoctrinated them in a national policy of hatred, ordered the to exterminate Jews, and they blindly obeyed the commands.
Kennedy and Johnson rounded up perfectly ordinary young me, indoctrinated them in a national policy of hatred, ordered them to exterminate Vietnamese, and they blindly obeyed the commands.
What was the difference? We sent boys half way around the world, to exterminate people who had only imaginary relevance to our own national security, who had never even heard of the USA. But the lies were the same.
