Westboro has been critical of Obama, many on the far left has been critical of Obama, Westboro is the far left.

I've known for a long time about Phelps' history as a Democrat politician in Kansas. I don't know why it isn't more widely known. Given his background as a trial lawyer, I always figured that he was just a scammer trying to provoke people into doing stuff that he could sue for. But I've never seen any real evidence that they have had any big lawsuit paydays, so I don't know.

There are socially conservative Democrats just like there are socially liberal Republicans. You can be extreme right wing on social issues and vote Democrat on fiscal issues. Westboro Baptist is hardly liberal on social issues and anyone who claims as much is a moron
