I thought he was talking about how government needs to do the big things individuals can't do by themselves to preserve a civil society where individual freedoms can flourish. But then again, that's just my understanding.

Our freedoms, rights, liberties are protected in the Constitution. It wasn't written by one man. Do some research. Sadly many like Obama don't like that document. You included.
