There is no solution to this problem. It is endemic to this society. We don't even punish drunk drivers adequately.

And you still have the situation where the woman at home with her children in GA shot a man who broke into the house carrying a roll of duct tape I hear ready to do goodness knows what to the woman and her kids.

This is endless. Pro-gun have their examples and anti-gun have theirs.

On another note, we are seeing something new in CA with this Dorner thing. With cops as the prime targets, most of their resources are going after this guy. Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? Well, they ain't coming; they are too busy protecting their own.

This society cannot be cured of violence and crime. It is expanding.

An 11-year-old boy was riding a bike through his Washington, D.C. neighborhood when he encountered a trio of unleashed pit bulls. The pit bulls viciously attacked the boy, with the young man’s uncle later recalling that all three of the dogs were biting the boy’s limbs. Actually, I have nothing but praise to offer the emergency responders, including the FBI and ATF. Without exception, they were all very polite and professional and not heavy handed at all.

Well I'm still living in this world, so that fact is obvious. I was basically responding to what Fred and Kathyrn were talking about in regards to mentally unstable people not allowing their caregivers to institutionalize them or being up to date on their medical records, what they are diagnosed with, the prescribed medicines, how unstable they can be, etc. Maybe it won't stop everything from happening, but it will bring a light to a serious disease that is plaguing the country, and find a way to repair it. Just because people murder and do drugs doesn't keep us from enacting laws, creating laws, and imprisoning people who break the law.

My brother has repeatedly threatened my parents and me with violence. He is guilty of numerous violent felonies after a rampage that ended in the ATF, FBI, bomb squads, snipers, bomb robots, sheriffs, deputies, police officers, and all sorts of responders and emergency vehicles (including helicopters for pete's sake!) and the media descending on my parents' property - and searching nearly every square inch of it.

After he was admitted to the mental institution, we were actually NOT ALLOWED to know anything about his diagnosis. You know why? Because he refused to give permission for us to know.

Even now - three months later, after he has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and a personality disorder (sociopath), whenever anyone lets us know anything about his mental condition, it's always in a whisper with the caveat, "Ok, you know I'm not really supposed to be telling you this..."

COME ON!
you are right, I should have said that if a person has broken the law, or acted violently then they can be committed against their will but you cant get them (in most cases) BEFORE they do something reallly bad.

That being said, you are also right that you cant keep them locked up.

I heard one Dr. say that if they have a person, and they get them on meds and stable, they have to release them if they are no longer a danger...even if the person tells the dr. that they will go off their meds once they leave the institution.

it is a strange world we live in.
