Ad spotlights Republican support for gay marriage – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

(CNN) - Prominent Republicans who support marriage rights for same-sex couples are the focus of a new million-dollar ad campaign that's set to roll out Wednesday.

The spot, from the Respect for Marriage Coalition, feature clips of former Vice President Dick Cheney, former first lady Laura Bush, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell all voicing their support for same-sex marriage rights. The ads also use a clip from President Barack Obama's second inaugural address in January.

The group said they would spend $1 million to air the ad, as well as run print ads in major newspapers utilizing the same quotes from the Republicans who back equal marriage rights.

Half of me loves this, yet the other half wishes Republicans would continue to hold on to their non-winning stance on this issue and continue to alienate a voting population that now favors gay marriage.

There are some big name Republicans involved in this "hug a gay" campaign including Dick Cheney, Laura Bush, Powell etc.

This move will make the "gay vote" irrelevant. If both parties embrace it, then the gay vote will be split like any other group, and the Dems cannot rely on it anymore. In that sense it makes sense, but on the other hand this just another principle the GOP is trash canning in order to pander for votes.

Dick cheney cannot hug anyone i believe any acts of love or kindness towards darth vader might put him in the hospital. Laura bush eh she had GWB so I give her a pass, powell well perhaps he's trying to get back in the good graces of the establishment republicans. Either way all this tell me is that they are bending more so on this issue because like with obama the fundraisers with the most money are gay and wealthy. And this goes for both sides

Democrats have to absolutely hate seeing this.

I tend to think that the Republicans who support gay marriage do so sincerely.

It is possible, but they would not spend millions on the campaign if it wasnt to pander for votes

Why? Do you think the general public would actually realize the GOP supports it? They actually believe the DNC claim that there is a war on women.

One huge hurdle covered.... now all the Repubs need to do is come up with a coherent plan for rebuilding the middle class (no, not trickle down) and stop wanting the people to fund unneeded wars and they would win in landslides.
