FDA: Calorie-count mandate of ObamaCare “extremely thorny” « Hot Air

Ok big government, more rules/regs loving fools, when the hell is enough enough? This over reaching pile of excrement also wants to force even grocery stores, among others to post calorie counts.

Stupid and a complete waste of time, money, and effort. Big government shows no bounds in its far reaching stupidity.

No one reads calorie counts. There is zero valid justification for this. You don't have to be a genius to know what foods are fatter than others. This would be just laughable if it weren't actually happening.

Not sure where you live, but stores and restaurants near me already do this and have for at least 4 years. The only exception I can think of is prepared chicken and raw meat products. It looks like it only applies to locations with 20 or more locations.

Who could have seen this coming? Well, besides anyone who actually paid attention when it first became known that the ObamaCare law contained a hidden mandate that forced food-selling chains of 20 or more locations to post calorie counts of every item for sale, a fact that only came out after the bill’s passage. Three years later — three years? — the FDA is still trying to figure out how to implement it … and failing:

It shouldn't apply to anyone, not even fast food chains who already have to do it. Its complete idiocy.

They are already doing it though, maybe not in every state, but they are already listing calories. I can count on my hands the number of places that don't already list nutritional information and they are all small companies that won't be impacted anyway. There are legitimate reasons to criticize Obamacare, but this isn't one.

Next we'll be required to "weigh in" at the grocery store and on our way out have our purchases inspected by FDA for contraban like "twinkies." Grrrr

The example in the video points out a big problem
How is a chain like Subway for instance going to give a customer anything resembling an accurate nutritional or calorie count when you can mix and match the ingredients?
And how many people are going to walk out or switch their order just because they actually did read the posted calorie count?
But that's OK. I'm all for this because we know that average Americans need to have government assist them with every little facet of their lives.
Next to come will be a little machine at points of purchase that require you to enter your income and living expenses so that you'll be allowed to buy something considered unneccessary

Ah yes Mary54!! No buying sweets unless you qualify at the weigh-in!

You absolutely know using your special powers that no one has ever read calorie counts? Well, that's wrong...I know I have and a number of people I know do. So your psychic powers of "knowing" have already failed. Same with intuitively "knowing" how many calories are in a meal, and which one has less. Some are obvious, and some are not.

If you can demonstrate these powers of knowing James Randi has a million dollars, even for something like calorie counts. Once you win his prize for having special powers I will believe.

I don't see the problem in letting people know what is in their food. That gives people the freedom to choose, instead of trying to play smoke and mirrors. You only have true freedom of choice when you have knowledge.

Did companies ever label the ingredients and list calories before laws required them to do so?
