I used to think stores increased the number of handicap spaces due to people living longer and remaining more independent.
Its easy to see that's not the case.
Huge increase in fat drivers, and possibly lax standards in issuing permits.
What's the deal here?

Fat people should not get handicapped spots. What a self fulfilling prophecy. Make them walk a little bit, it won't kill them.

I believe a culture of rampant obesity is to blame.

If only the man upstairs had made it very clear being fat would earn you a one-way ticket to hell.

Great foresight, god!

It doesn't bother me because the only place I ever see the handicap spots fill up is at the Casinos around here.

I don't care, if someone needs a HC spot then they need a HC spot, for whatever reason. Being over weight is the new smoker.

I've never seen a fat person use a handicap parking space.

I know someone who is overweight. Not morbidly obese, just overweight. They are also in their late 70's, have had hip surgery & also have COPD & no, it's not from smoking. They have a handicapped sticker, rightfully so. Perhaps some of those "fat" people you see have other medical issues going on that require a handicapped sticker. I see people here at work park in handicapped spots w/their handicapped sticker all the time & they have no obvious physical disabilities. The news actually ran a story about it once years ago. Too bad it didn't change things.

I am. What gets me even more are the people who don't have a placard or license plate and do it anyway. And there is nothing wrong w/them. I will admit I have done it a few times, but only when I tore my ACL and was on crutches. I still felt bad cuz I didn't have the placard, but it wasn't that long term and my bf did most of the running around for me during that time. I also just remembered a deal we have here in San Antonio. Just regular citizens can ticket people for parking in handicap and fire zones. I need to sign up. You get sworn in by a judge and can put tickets on the cars. I think that is great. I know that was not the subject, but still it would be fun.

I think OP was omitting any old-looking people from his disparagement.

What's sad is that most morbidly obese people probably do have awful medical conditions that justify having one of those stickers. A walk across the walmart would probably constitute the best remedy for their ills. Alas, ''my feet get all swollen'' seems to be a solid enough argument against self-improvement for many obese people.
