"When it comes to ethnicity, geography can be destiny. If Pope Francis' parents had immigrated to New York City instead of Buenos Aires, he would be seen as a white Italian-American. But until he makes a definitive statement, his identity will remain subject to debate."

New pope revives question: What is a 'Latino?'

Pope Francis IS "Hispanic" since he's from Argentina tho he'd be "anglo white" if born in the US.

He would be a white hispanic here - especially if he were a neighborhood watch volunteer.

A latino is a person with roots in Latin America. That's all...it's not complicated. Doesn't matter where your family came from before they got to Latin America. Afica, Asia, Europe,...doesn't matter. If you were born in Latin America, you're a Latino.

During the slavery & segregation era there evolved a vocabulary to precisely delineate racial taxonomy such as 'quadroon' (one fourth black) and octaroon (one eighth black)
Quadroon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Today such vocabulary comes largely from the left with such terms as "white hispanic" (courtesy of the NYT) and "people of color" (i.e. everyone except whites). Which btw raises the question: are 'white hispanics' people of color, or no?

I think most of us on the right believe that it is time to climb out of the rabbit hole of race and call ourselves all Americans (or Argentinians, in Argentina).

You cannot be hispanic, unless you are from Spanish speaking central or south america. Italians are not latin/hispanic.

The pope is of Italian family but HE comes from Argentina so he'd count as a Hispanic. Tho calling Spaniards "Hispanic" sometimes makes them mad despite it being the truth.

According to what some right wingers have told me here, he's a non-white because he's Latino. ROFL!

"Race" seems to get confused with "ethnicity" in the US. "Hispanic" or "Latino" are not races; they are usually just group/geographic descriptions.

In common usage in the US, it usually means native or mestizo, though. That's probably fair to say as well. "Mestizo" meaning someone of Amerindian/Mesoamerican origin mixed with European settler ancestry or sometimes African ancestry. That's why the stereotypical "Latino" in the American imagination looks more or less like a Mexican of mestizo ancestry.

Yes, he counts as a hispanic/latino, but my reply was to the person who said he would be "white hispanic" if he had been born and raised in New York. It is not true. A person born and raised on Spain (europe) is not Hispanic/Latino either, because ONLY those who originate from central or south america can be hispanic/latino. Had the pope been born and raised in NY to the same parents, he would be "Italian American". Either way he is white. Being hispanic/latino is not a reference to race.
