It doesn't make sense to enact a law that will not prevent crime.
Requiring background checks for private sales will close a rather large loophole, I would expect that law obiding gun owners would welcome this. According to your quotes there are 13% from guns shows and 20% from other private sales that end up in crimes, including thse sales will make it more difficult for criminals to get guns.

So why arnt the criminals who illegal try to get guns prosecuted? When only 62 people are prosecuted out of 76,142 who were denied (it is a felony to lie on form 4473) why would another law be the best solution. Maybe you should start with the 70k plus people who have already broke the law.

How would the government know a gun someone owns was purchased legally or not? So if I have a gun, how would the government know if I legally purchase it or illegally bought it from someone without a background check?

The fact that they want to make more laws when they don't enforce those already on the books is insane.
