I have to agree with Jasper. After 30 years working in the financial field I switched over to the public sector and I'm now working with a very diverse workforce, and I have to say, for a white guy, it's like working in a minefield.
Every word, every action, even dress can be taken out of context by an "aggrieved" party. And as soon as a complaint is made you have to take sensitivity training, which is an incredible racket...I now understand why Sharpton and Jackson keep pushing their racist baloney, there's a lot of money to be made.
Even food can be a problem...someone brought in chocolate frosted yellow-cake cupcakes for a birthday, and you guessed it, sensitivity classes were mandated for everyone.
Every job I ever worked had stupid, unfair, and damaging-to-someone politics of some sort, so I'm not defending them. Even the military has petty personal agendas in play at the lower levels. "Political correctness" is an especially favorite term of today's right wing media expressed 24/7, as though it exists only on the left - especially where race is involved. I would hope most people know better. I hate the whole notion of having taboo words and expressions which change from day to day, but being pragmatic, I'm a nonconformist who could get in trouble pretty quick. Point is, this stuff exists everywhere on "both sides".
There are always two agendas in the workplace, one personal, one corporate - sometimes the personal one gets the upper hand unfortunately.
I am also aware that all humans can be racist and engage in personal vendettas - it just depends on who is outnumbered. When this stuff happens in the workplace, it is a failure of management, but that is today's self-indulgent "have things my own way" attitude everywhere - even with managers. Yeah, I've been there.
Too bad we have to put up with it or conform in order to keep our jobs. However, I think this nonsense is old as dirt - it's just the situations which are different.
So yeah, I'm spreading the blame around...

I see PC coming more from the left than the right.
This isn't about political correctness. The oreos were intended to insult. Bringing chicken, watermelon or oreos to a party is, perfectly ok. Using them to deliver a message is not. I suppose you could get yourself into trouble here if you invited the black panthers to dinner and served fried chicken, watermelon and oreos though.... I'd make sure there was lots of other stuff on the menu...
I did witness the children of one neighbor taunting a young professional couple who lived on the same block with "Oreo, oreo...you're only black on the outside", years ago when I lived in Detroit, but I thought this was just something ignorant kids did. I have never seen an adult do this.
It's pretty juvenile, but in the grand scheme of social problems I don't think this is a really big one.
It is a big problem. It's exactly why so many blacks decide to sit on the sidelines and not take on jobs like this. Who wants to put their families through stuff like this?
What do you think of the oreo stunt by protesters of the emergency manager in Detroit. As a former Detroiter, I'm stunned. I've seen kids call black people oreos but I've never seen adults do it.
I know many immigrants that are offended by the cessation of the word illegal. Their point is that they came here legally and are known as immigrants and have had to work hard to gain citizenship. The illegals have not. They are quite vocal about it as well. I can't say that I blame them.
So, if you don't have a chicken neck, and listen to rap, have a lot of jewelry that make you look like an idiot and a caddy from 1976 with rims that make it look outright stupid your an Oreo? LOL. Mkayyy
From your perspective, most of the civilized world is liberal. The corporate-owned media prefers other corporatists in power who will deregulate them, meaning republicans. That's why this "mainstream liberal media" never returns the daily 24/7 denigration heaped upon them by Fox.
McCain politically correct? Racially? Expect to see more repubs come around as they grow more desperate for votes in a changing society. It will be phony posturing, of course.
