Well, are there any cities in the US that are socially progressive and lean conservative on fiscal issues?

SoCal, some of the larger Texas cities (Houston, Austin, Dallas).

It was either Houston or Phoenix that recently elected an openly lesbian and very fiscally conservative mayor.

Edit - It was Houston.

You mean the only future the republican party has, but fails to see?

As a Republican who is a moderate/slightly left wing on the moral compass and right of center on economic issues, I agree with this statement. I'm also a young Republican, and probably represent the future of our party as far as the "live and let live" mentality on social issues while still supporting the economics of low taxes, pro business, less government interference. I couldn't stomach voting for a democrat, but the Republican establishment makes it hard for me to support them when they spout this holier than thou religious BS all the time.

Austin Texas for sure. I'm from Texas and this is the only city in Texas I would ever consider moving back to.

You need to start screaming at Republicans, because the republican party is ignoring you. Worse, they think that the only reason that they aren't connecting with young people is because they didn't "tweet more"...

There is a moral divide, so to speak, between young republicans and old republicans. Right now it's working for the republican party because they are winning enough, but young Americans will remember the anti-gay sentiment (AKA, the "Civil Rights" of our time) going forward.

Oh trust me, I've been screaming for a while. And there are many Republicans who think they aren't connecting to the American people because they aren't right wing enough. Which is absurd. It is shameful that in order to win the primary in the Presidential election in our party that you have to cater to the dumbass segment of our party. Except that a lot of our politicians who run actually believe in the bull**** they spew about gays and other moral issues that are irrelevant to the issues out country is facing.

San Diego. Voters rejected a new airport in 2006 and is one of the few big cities to consistently elect Republican mayors.

Such as Bob Filner, the most leftist mayor in the state (other than some small cities), who beat moderate Republican Carl DiMaio?

San Diego and Sacramento are California's two moderate big cities, pretty centrist all around (despite SD's current mayor).
