Sudan's problems date back more than 3 decades... to the time of the Ottoman Empire when that venerable Islamic empire's colonial thirst oppressed the southern Sudanese territories for exploitation of people, slaves and resources.
A lot of angry Muslims seem to forget - conveniently - that their own religion's historical conquests of others rivals and exceeds that of any European power.
It's only the 20th century that has seen the Arab/Muslim world turn from pernicious "colonizers" to the "colonized".... and these days that region, which is so sickened to its core with horrible conservative religious tendencies is so literally useless due to its religiosity that the only thing of value to humanity that has come out of Middle Eastern society is oil.
